You got to feel sorry for Max Ehmer

I might be in a minority of one but I don't think Masterson/Ogie has seemed to be as defensively secure as either Masterson/Ehmer last season or Ehmer/Ogie this season. It would interesting to see a breakdown of goals conceded for each of those partnerships.

It is debatable whether playing on the ground, or playing out from defence** will net us more goals with the players we have but if we have a shakier defence we are certainly more likely to immediately concede an equaliser.

** it is often said that the opposition rarely score from Row Z or their own half. It always used to amuse me how often Tony Butler used to find Row Z but he was a pretty decent defender, when not paired with Breen.

I have never been a big fan of Ehmer but he does seem to be able to play alongside both Masterson and Ogie.

Masterson and Ogie so far do not appear to have gelled, hopefully it will come.

Anybody have the stats on how we are conceding goals? I might be wrong but I feel we are vulnerability to headers in the box when I would think Masterson and Ogie should be able dominate that area.

In training now Clemence is wanting them to play on the ground and you can't hit a ball above head height!!

Very laudable working on that with the younger players but good luck with Lower league veterans. I can us coming undone regularly with teams coming at us with a high aggressive press in the next month or so.

Always like the way under the fat one we would exploit teams ticky tacking at the back with an aggressive press.

Direct play has its uses. It used to be trying to hit your big men but these days it doesn’t matter if the opposition get it back as long as there in a press. Winning the ball back in the final third often easier than trying to put 20 pases together

No doubt we will hopefully we will still mix it up a bit.

Do/have you ever watched Max in a game? In fact (despite the bandwagon that appears to have developed), he rarely resorts to hoofing the ball foreward. Unless that is the defence/midfield is in such a tangle that the only option is the "John Smith's 'av it" (from the Peter Kay ad).

I'd love to know when this bandwagon started and why so many people seem disposed to jump on it. Mind you there's a lot that'll jump on any passing bandwagon 🙄

I'm totally with GBN's (and Blue to the Gills) comments and opinions about the Masterson/Ogie combination. For me, Ogie is the weaker part of the defence. He's quick, but then as he (imho) makes too many positioning and other errors, he needs to be to recover from them.

Edit:- I'll now get back to my sickbed (whoever gave me this cold at Manchester Airport, may you rot in the deepest pits of hell)

Andy Cole needs five chances, Carrick too slow, etc.

I hate the 'modern' pass the ball from your goal line, recycle, pass through the lines boring football.

Get the ball from the back to the front as quick as possible and get fast players down the flanks and if that means a long pass that some people call hoof ball then bring it on.

Worked for Fergie but not good enough now lol.

Goalkeepers can still get away with hoofing it, as demonstrated by our ex Keeper Tom Hadler who provided an "assist" in the Ramsgate v Woking game last week - see from about 12 seconds onwards in these highlights:

I wouldn't be adverse to Ogie having a rest from the side. Was our best player at the start of the season but going off the boil in recent weeks and didn't do himself any favours against Wrexham. At only 22 time is still on his side, and being dropped wouldn't harm his development and motivation to get himself back in.

Yes on many occasions. Its a running joke between my son and I how our midfielders get stiff necks when Max is playing watching the ball go over them.

Then maybe the forwards should push onto defenders and midfield should push to close the gap and stop the ball coming back.
At least max clears the danger.

Like Max always have, dedicated professional to Gills, always a but, seemed like few games on the trot made one or two huge errors, some leading to goals,

Here’s what is supposed to happen.

Centre half is in possession.
One or two midfielders come deep to collect a simple pass from them.
Midfielder then turns, pushes up the pitch, passing to a teammate, either left or right.

What actually happens.

Centre half is in possession.
Midfielders are stationary with their fingers up their backsides.
Centre half is closed down and hoofs it up the pitch to relieve pressure.

The movement in the midfield is the key.

I agree, I’ve been disappointed with Masterson this season.

Trouble is despite not being as good as he was at the start of the season he is still one of the best performers week in week out, would be harsh to drop him.

Masterson was excellent in the latter half of last season – alongside Max Ehmer.

Ogie was fantastic in the early stages of this season – alongside Max Ehmer.

It takes a partnership to be successful at centre back, and Max has been a superb defensive partner for a whole host of centre backs for the best part of a decade for us now. He’s a leader, he’s organised, he’s technically proficient despite what some would have you believe. Even if he was ‘just a hoofer’, then they have their place too especially in League Two.

No-one who saw him play would consider Gary Richards a highly technical quality centre back, but he was part of a superb pair with Simon King who complimented each other perfectly and were very successful together. When played alongside Matt Lawrence or Tony Sinclair in his latter years with us he looked more or less what he was, which was a ‘head it, kick it’ centre back who specialised in the long ball.

Ehmer is nowhere near as ‘hoofy’ as Richards was, and for me should still be one of the first names on the team sheet.
