Are charities being used to withhold welfare?

A food bank in Nottingham has announced it will close at the end of the year, accusing the local city council of using it to avoid making hardship payments to vulnerable people.

Nottingham City Council stands accused by a food bank of withholding hardship support in the "expectation that they [applicants] seek help from friends or family and the food banks".

NG7 Food Bank has therefore decided to close at the end of the year, accusing senior officials of advocating "the co-opting of food banks, as part of their strategies in avoidance of using their own funds".

The food bank has fed more than 5,200 people in its 30 months, a sizeable chunk of the 913,138 people supported by food banks in 2013-14.

According to the Trussell Trust, a charity that oversees 420 such banks, more than 330,000 of the people fed were children. If that proportion was replicated at the NG7 Food Bank then around 1,800 recipients of food would have been Nottingham children.

Our Gov think nothing of throwing tax payers money at Europe, bailing the banks out while supporting illegal wars, matching donations to high profile charities, giving huge tax breaks to the large corps like Amazon and Starmucks, any country with a food shortage and the UK is there in a flash helping everyone else out, while 330,000 children are surviving by charity, not in any third world country, right here, next door to each and everyone of us.

And now the cheeky ******* are holding back on their duty of care because you can beg some food off a charity :29: :29: :29:

Good point Juan.

Your point regarding successive governments donating to countries worldwide where there is food shortages etc etc is a valid one. I've always decreed charity begins at home.

Just keeps getting better doesn't it?

Thank God we are all in this together.

Advisor from where mate?

Your only supposed to be able to go 3 times to the food bank, with an agency chit, in 6 months, with Trussel. Our Church is the central point for the food bank in York. However they are having to make discretionary concessions on that, because of what is happening..

The job centre and the welfare rights I was trying to get a crisis loan which funnily enough got approved for £500 I think and was promised it would be in the bank by the following Monday but when I went to the bank on the Monday to draw some cash out no money. So I get on the blower to find out where it was and she said it had been cancelled because apparently now I didn't qualify but in the mean time I had used the housing benefit for electric gas and food and my rent was due but no one had the decency to give me a ring to let me know of this sudden change of heart. When I think about it since my accident I have been treated distgustingly and probably illegally but there would be no chance of proving it.
