Yellow Cards 2020-21

Shows how our game has developed that the centre halves are way down the list. You used to be able to pretty much guarantee the old fashioned bruiser centre back would get suspended a couple of times a year.

With eight games to be played before the cut-off, the following players could be at risk:

6: Grant, McGrandles
5: Bridcutt, Eyoma, Johnson, Jones

Bridcutt should be ok because of his injury, but we are missing him for a lot of games anyway. McGrandles has collected three yellows in his last four games, and Grant three in his last five - we can certainly do without losing Grant for two games.

Update after the Crewe game, in which we collected our first yellows in three:

League One

The second cut-off point is the 37th league game of the season, currently scheduled to be the away game at Oxford on 26 March. Ten yellow cards on or before that game will result in an automatic two-match ban.

6: Grant, Jones, McGrandles
5: Bridcutt, Eyoma, Johnson
4: Edun, Jackson, Montsma
3: Bramall*
2: Walsh
1: Hopper, Morton, Palmer, Rogers, Roughan, Scully
0: Anderson, Archibald, Howarth, Poole, Sanders

*Bramall: 3 yellows for Colchester

There are five games remaining until the final cut-off point, game No.37. These are the players at risk:

6: Grant, Jones, McGrandles
5: Bridcutt, Eyoma, Johnson

With Grant and Bridcutt unlikely to play any games in that time through injury and Eyoma in and out of the side, the only players who need to be careful are Jones, McGrandles and Johnson.

Update after the Ipswich game:

League One

The second cut-off point is the 37th league game of the season, currently scheduled to be the away game at Oxford on 26 March. Ten yellow cards on or before that game will result in an automatic two-match ban.

6: Grant, Jones, McGrandles
5: Bridcutt, Edun, Eyoma, Johnson, Montsma
4: Jackson
3: Bramall*
2: Walsh
1: Hopper, Morton, Palmer, Rogers, Roughan, Scully
0: Anderson, Archibald, Howarth, Poole, Sanders

*Bramall: 3 yellows for Colchester

With only four games remaining until the 37-game cut-off, only Jones and McGrandles can now collect a two-game yellow card suspension. They would need a yellow in each game to reach ten.

League One

The second cut-off point is the 37th league game of the season, currently scheduled to be the away game at Oxford on 26 March. Ten yellow cards on or before that game will result in an automatic two-match ban. With no yellow cards in the game against Rochdale, we have avoided any suspensions for the time being.

The next cut-off point is the 46th game of the season: fifteen yellow cards on or before that date will incur a three-game suspension that may be carried over to next season. With twelve games remaining, that is looking very unlikely to happen.

6: Grant, Jones, McGrandles
5: Bridcutt, Edun, Eyoma, Johnson, Montsma
4: Jackson
3: Bramall*
2: Walsh
1: Hopper, Morton, Palmer, Rogers, Roughan, Scully
0: Anderson, Archibald, Howarth, Poole, Sanders

*Bramall: 3 yellows for Colchester

Update after the Sunderland game.

The final cut-off point is the 46th game of the season: fifteen yellow cards on or before that date will incur a three-game suspension that may be carried over to next season. With ten games remaining, the only players who can still pick up a yellow card suspension are those currently on 5 or 6:

6: Bridcutt, Edun, Grant, Johnson, Jones, McGrandles
5: Eyoma, Montsma
4: Jackson
3: Bramall*
2: Walsh
1: Hopper, Morton, Palmer, Rogers, Roughan, Scully
0: Anderson, Archibald, Howarth, Poole, Sanders

*Bramall: 3 yellows for Colchester

I can only recall the Jackson sending off this season as well. Discipline has been pretty good on the whole and certainly improved over most recent seasons

Update after the Oxford game.

The final cut-off point is the 46th game of the season: fifteen yellow cards on or before that date will incur a three-game suspension that may be carried over to next season. With nine games remaining, the only players who can still pick up a yellow card suspension are those currently on 6 or 7:

7: Edun
6: Bridcutt, Grant, Johnson, Jones, McGrandles
5: Eyoma, Montsma
4: Jackson
3: Bramall*
2: Walsh
1: Hopper, Morton, Palmer, Rogers, Roughan, Scully
0: Anderson, Archibald, Howarth, Poole, Sanders

*Bramall: 3 yellows for Colchester

Update after the Blackpool game.

The final cut-off point is the 46th game of the season: fifteen yellow cards on or before that date will incur a three-game suspension that may be carried over to next season. With eight games remaining, the only players who can still pick up a yellow card suspension are those currently on 7, and they would each have to pick up a yellow card in every remaining game:

7: Edun, Johnson, Jones, McGrandles
6: Bridcutt, Grant
5: Eyoma, Montsma
4: Jackson
3: Bramall*
2: Morton, Walsh
1: Hopper, Palmer, Rogers, Roughan, Scully

Thanks for the update, any play off rules or suspension that can carry over?

Thanks for the update, any play off rules or suspension that can carry over?
That's a very good question. As usual, the FA guidelines are gloriously vague: the player handbook merely states that the 15-card cut-off arrives at the end of the season prior to the play-offs, but then fails to tell us what happens thereafter. The EFL rules do not appear to address the question either. For what it's worth, I believe that a yellow in each leg of a semi-final means suspension from the final. And a red receives a suspension that is carried over to the following season in the normal way. Don't quote me on that - presumably someone will let us know if and when we make it.
