Would You Have A Problem Supporting A Gay Footballer?

5 Live had an online poll asking about gay footballers. According to their poll, 8% of football fans would have a problem supporting a team with an openly gay player.

The article also reveals that our own Tommy 'Der Hammer' Hitzelsberger is now openly gay. I can't imagine he's the only Villa player to be gay in my lifetime.

I think Villa fans are probably some of the most open minded football fans but you never know.

So would have a problem supporting the Villa if we had an openly gay player?

Here's a link to The Guardian's article about the poll:

Give us a chance I've only just stopped paying for my kids.

But no I wouldn't and have been quite shocked by the official survey. Of the minority who were offended by gay footballers, the majority were quite young. I thought we'd moved on form that bigotry.

I can't believe anyone would have a problem in this day and age. The only criteria I have for Villa players is if they are any good or not.

In the same way I have no problem with black players or any other race for example. Look over to St. Pauli in Germany and Rayo Vallecano in Spain as to how an all inclusive culture can work, be celebrated and become an identity associated with such clubs. I'd really like to think my club isn't facist/homophobic whatever.

Can't believe someone has voted yes!

I'm quite proud that one of our own Thomas Hitslberger was first gay footballer in the premier league to openly admit his sexuality. Justin Fashanu probably took his life of related issues. The bottom line is people who have a problem with gay footballers are just thick.

I'm surprised that someone has voted yes too. It's 1 vote out of 11 so that's pretty close to the 5 Live survey. I'd love to hear from the yes voter about their opinion.

One thing I find ironic about PC culture is that minorities must be fully embraced, except those minorities they don't like like people who are against gay marriage.

Trouble is he wasn't really, he waited until he retired. I understand why etc etc etc but no, he wasn't the first prem player in the PL to admit his sexuality.

Whoever is voting yes... get a grip... jeez what is wrong with people?

There are alleged rumours a famous player who plays for a European team who was in the EPL will come out of the closet when he retires. True or not I don't know, though the person who told me isn't the type to believe just anything

(edited due to I named the team and on reflecting didn't this was a good idea)

Going back to my earlier post about the irony of PC culture, I feel that we (as a society) don't listen to the voices of those we disagree with enough.

Players like Hitzelsberger won't come out during their careers because of the fear of how fans will react.

There are 8% of football fans who would have a real problem with having an openly gay player in their team (according to that survey).

We view that as horribly intolerant.

Still, those people who have a problem with gay footballers won't openly admit it and won't discuss it because of the reaction they will get from the other 92% of football fans.

Both sets of people are in the same situation.

I believe we would be much better off accepting those who are different from us and discussing different ideas (even ones we fundamentally disagree with).

We have developed a society which is very tolerant towards certain ideas and very intolerant towards others.

the two yes's just amaze me, this is 2017 people, and 10% of voters on this thread have a problem with gay footballers??? Fuck me!! :21:

Ok , tin hat on .
I have no issue what so ever with how anyone lives his or her life , straight , gay , both , swinging, and so on. I do have an issue with what seems to be a relentless liberal agenda to promote a certain way of life and be utterly intolerant of anyone who doesn't support or agree with. Why do we have to know if someone is gay? I have never advertised my sexuality, it's my private business.

I think you'll find it's the psychological damage done living a lie. It could also be the constant fear of being found out.

It's very stressful.

Maybe the people voting yes are religious? Some religions are quite openly anti gay. Wrongly IMO in this day and age?
Damn, I was hoping to turn this into a thread on religion, but you beat me to it. :10: :19:

I've seen that argument quite a lot along with "you don't hear straight people coming out as straight!"

Big difference. Being straight doesn't get you bullied, discriminated against, shunned, beaten up or worse just because your straight.

It's also a lot to with young gay people who are terrified of coming out to their parents, friends etc because of the reaction or consequences. Why should they have to hide who they are? It can be a very dark lonely experience for them and does lead to depression and suicide in many cases.

Also I can't believe 2 people voted yes. Pathetic.
