World Cup Presentation

I find presentations of trophies pathetic, embarrassing and undignified now. Why grounds can’t have proper steps up to the box and do tHings income a more dignified way, I don’t know. There were far too many people on the stage today - no need for macron, suker, the attention seeking Croatian president (looks like she’s let herself go a bit compared to some of the snaps of her in her bikini I saw some time back!), and general cast of thousands to be there. Also, the touching and kissing of the trophy before it was awarded was particular undignified as was the amateur dramatics. Just award the trophy to the captain in a dignified way and then let the celebrations commence.

Disappointed that harry Kane and Courtois couldn’t have hung around to get their awards. Surely it’s a pinnacle of a player’s career to get such awards? As we know, times have changed in football.

Careful what you say Steve. , In Nottinghamshire , Police are treating misogyny as a 'hate crime' .....

Was funny seeing them all get soaked to the skin by the deluge. This was the tournament England bid for, with Prince William and co claiming they were all lied to over who had said they would vote for us.
Maybe the dignitaries would have preferred our 30C heatwave for the final and post-match events today?

Says the man. More tissues please.

Just amusing that Putin kept reasonably dry and didn't do the gentlemanly thing and offer his umbrella to the Croatian lady

That wasn't actually her, it was some American rapper's wife that just happens to look a bit like her.

Harry Kane hadn't won the award until the final whistle and would probably have been criticised for turning up to pick up an individual award four days after we were eliminated.

I can't see that picking up a meaningless award in a stadium mainly filled by Russians, French and Croatians while the French celebrated winning the World Cup would ever be the pinnacle in a player's career.

Agree about the cringeworthy amateur dramatics re trophy presentations.

We might have been eliminated four days earlier but the team didn't get straight back on a plane home because they still had the third/fourth place play off to play the day before the final. With this in mind, I'd suggest that it would be small-minded to criticise Kane or Courtois (sp?) if they'd wanted to hang around and collect their individual awards.

With regard to the actual presentation of the trophy, I'd agree with some of the comments on this thread about it being embarrassing and cringeworthy. As was the fucking goal celebration music. If an artificial atmosphere has to be created at the World Cup final the game is pretty fucked. Thankfully, I don't think it an atmosphere does need to be artificially created. So why the fuck do they do it?

The compulsion to manage and control premised on the fear that things not managed are evidence that the manager is not doing their job and that things not managed are out of control.

Agree. Kane only had to delay his trip by a day - it would have taken a hat trick in the final to unthrome him. I’d hardly say the golden boot is a meaningless award. I, and I am sure a lot of posters here, can remember most golden boot winners in their football watching career - Lineker, Schillaci, Suker, Ronaldo, Forlan, Klose etc etc all come off the tip of the tongue for me without even thinking about it - I could even throw in Rossi, Fontaine, Eusebio, Kempis an muller before I was born (or was in nappies)!

I wouldn’t be able to remember barely any top premier league scorers or European club football top scorers. Can’t think of a better individual goal scoring award in the game than the golden boot.

Also, I’d have thought Courtois would have been tipped off about the golden glove before he went home.

So in short. I still think it’s a poor show that they weren’t there and it sums up the modern game that they weren’t.

Lots of great players there Steve. Do you remember which ones attended the final to pick up their award?

The achievement is in being the top scorer - not in being at the WC final to pick up the award from some guy in a suit.

Odd to criticise the pomp and ceremony on the day and then criticise Kane for not wanting to be involved. Either way Kane would have been criticised by someone who thinks they know how to live his life better than he does. Some people unfortunately love something to moan about.

I can’t remember all of the ceremonies as they haven’t lived in the memory for years as they’ve been an undignified mess for a long time. I do remember however (when presentation ceremonies were more dignified and down to earth) schillacci picking up the golden boot and both bobby robson and lineker going up to pick up the fair play award (not sure what’s happened to that) a day after a third place playoff at the 1990 final I remember as a 12 year old being proud we deservedly won it (and would have walked it this year if it still existed) and pleased to see them going up to get it.

Tell me where I criticise the pomp and ceremony? I like pomp and ceremony in a presentation ceremony, but I like it to be organised and dignified. Yesterday's was disorganised, a mess and full of people who shouldn’t be there attention seeking and getting there face in things they had no right to be involved in - particularly undignified was people (both players, politicians and officials kissing, touching and hugging the word cup before it was awarded).

Since that was Italia 90, I suspect it would be less of a hassle for an Italian to hang around than someone who'd need to return on a plane to their home country.

Spain won the fair play award but the miserable gits didn't hang on until the final to collect it.

Could be down to the fact that they weren't winning it until after they had already gone home?

Uruguay had a better discipline record until they picked up a couple of yellows in their defeat to France in the following round.

What was that whoooshing sound?
