Workers 'could be forced to pay £5 a week' to get benefits

........................................................

Workers could be forced to pay at least £5 a week into a personal “welfare account” to get higher benefits if they lose their job, under a plan being considered by George Osborne.

In a report published today, the Policy Exchange think-tank proposes a shake-up of the welfare system to strengthen its original “contributory principle”, under which the amount people receive in benefits is linked to how much people have paid in.

Allies say the Chancellor is keen to extend “personal responsibility” in the welfare system. The report is being studied by the Downing Street Policy Unit and such reforms could be signalled in the Conservatives’ general election manifesto.

Well i think enough tax is paid, wheras if i somehow hit the jackpot one day and dream money job of over 20k a year say i would be happy to pay a fiver a week tbh, but folk on less than 20k should not have too imo they pay too much as it is!

Ugh I hate repeating myself that pesky Fear :17: But yes I think it's a great idea and as said I wish something like this had been in place before I had my accident.Clive I would of thought the lower paid would benefit most from this scheme as they more than likely would have very little if any savings.

Good point that mate but how come after all these years the low paid pay there taxes anyway which should cover some help when they need it?

As Wurzel...

However, cross party, they should get together, say they can't afford the ever burgeoning doo dah and give those who want it an opt out to go get their own insurance for some parts maybe.

Or ...

No, it is so difficult, we are meant to have paid in, it is meant to be our safety net (I needed it once, I had paid in tax wise before, I do so again now) but we as a country obviously aren't handling our tax etc income well and it all needs reforming.

Only way, as said, it can be done is via cross party agreement, no one party can really reform tax, NHS, pensions to the extent that they are needed to be reformed.

Things could be far simpler, the tax system alone is bogged down in so many rules and regulations.

oh I see, re-read... a higher level.

Interesting.

Would want far more meat on the bone before even considering if it is right or wrong though!

Point is though Clive it dosen't I have found that out the hard way.For thirty two years I was a Tarmacker or as I know your pc Asphalt operative and because without sounding a pompous tit very good at my job would always have work till I retired. I never thought I would have such a serious accident that effectively would finish my working days at 48.Now when you consider I have always earned well above the national average wage did I get any favours or extra benefit nope absolutely nothing my missus had to pack in work so we qualified for housing benefit. All the savings I had have gone and I have become dependant on handouts from family and friends so any extra would be a big help so something like this could save a lot of heartache when you really need it.

It could be argued/debated that we should have to have accident etc insurance to help towards the safety net.

Unsure, just a debate I would like to see happen so we could decide!

The link Kefkat put up also says a reduction in national insurance if you are contributing, so potentially this looks like a move towards privatising parts of the benefit system.

Right or wrong, it might have to come to that as this country just can't afford its aging population, not if it wants to continue bombing other countries and paying out billions in aid to foreign countries whilst ignoring those here who need aid!!!!!

I think it's a good concept. £5 a week isn't that much, lets face it, you can't get much for a fiver these days and if it was building to enhance any benefits you'd get if you lose your job, it can't be that bad.

:22: "We" as a people have mostly worked our socks off and paid into a system that is already supposed to pay our future benefits, just try getting it when you really need it :26:

They, as in those who pull the strings of our puppet governments are the ones who continue to mismanage the money that we pay into the system, for politicians and bankers read criminals and wankers, this country generates enough money to have a healthy NHS, an A+ schooling system, a gov who invest in the skillsets of the population and who make the most of our natural resources, all for a fraction of the cost of an illegal invasion in the middle east.

For reforming, it's rip it up and start again.

hence the need for cross party Juan

And yes, 'we' agree on your differentiation but it is clear I mean we as in those who are controlling (and that isn't just those voted in, it is the vested interests and it is the old school tie brigade at Whitehall)
