Winter world cup.

Fifa have recommended that the 2022 finals be played between 26th Nov and 23rd Dec, 2022.The exact dates may be tweaked but are not expected to change much before being ratified next month. The move will create massive disruption to domestic seasons for years. Richard Scudamore, premier league chief executive, had this to say. "Our particular concern is that a FIFA World Cup that finishes late in December could result in damaging one of the English game's great traditions and attractions, with the removal of the entire PL and FAC xmas and new year fixture programme that season".
The most likely outcome is a domestic season which will last 11 months. Starting mid July 2022 to June 2023, breaking for 2 months for World cup finals and preparation. F.A Cup replays and two legged league cup ties will likely be scrapped that season. FIFA of course would demand that all (professional) domestic leagues are postponed during the finals so as not to distract from them.
If this were cricket or rugby, would the domestic season be so affected or would they get on with it using squad players?

Get over it it won't be the last time the WC is played in the winter every 8-12 years as more nations come into the fold. Not only that you 7 years to plan for this. Still.

The fact that the bidding process was "flawed" is irrelevant to this particular argument.

26th november. So before that you need to have a couple of weeks with your squad to prepare for it.

I don't see how its going to work. Finishing the season in june and then starting up in august. Pre season starts early july lol. I guess no thought what so ever was put in to giving qatar the WC instead of just greed.

Actually I don't think it would be a bad idea to let whoevers left at home and youth carry on the season as it would give them experience but I can't see the PL chairman of the big boys going for that.

It can work, of course it can, but the price will be a huge disruption to the PL and other European leagues, the hardest part for the PL is the loss of the fixtures over the xmas/new year period...

So we can do it.

The issue really is, why should we?

Would they be holding the event if this material fact had been part of their original proposal and bid...?

Not a chance in hell.

Personally, given the slave conditions, the construction deaths and the support and succor that this countries elite gives to Islamic terrorist organisations, I will as a matter of principle completely ignore it.

They on it through corruption and FIFA's complicity in a flawed corrupt process - I see no reason why we should have anything to do with it.

The leagues also have the option of continuing without the players off at the WC. And in 7 years I am sure someone can figure out how to deal with it.

The biggest clubs in Europe should refuse to release their players.

The WC is a summer tournament, if a country can't host it in the summer it doesn't get it, end of.

It is a global tournament. And it is summer south of the equator right now. How do you accommodate those countries?

Couldn't care less !
The bulk of the players come from European teams, why should all European leagues have to adjust for up to 3 seasons to accomodate a 4 week tournament that has always been held in the ( European) summer months ?

When was the vote taken to change the time it was held ?

Not an option, FIFA won't allow it.

I don't think any other football is allow whilst it is on. Which will have an affect on the lower league clubs if enforced

The world cup is supposed to be open to all countries regardless of race, colour or religion. Holders of a Israeli passport are prohibited to enter Qatar because of it. This is one of the most vile countries in the world. What happens if Israel qualify and how safe will the Israeli fans be when visiting? If they are allowed in of course.

80 - agree with you totally - it is really about time the Europeans started to believe that there is a world beyond Europe...

pokerfaced - a great question.... similarly will the Arab nations be welcomed in Israel ?

Can you ever envisage a world where Israel is given a world cup finals? They are forced by FIFA to qualify through the Euro draw which is probably 4 or 5 times harder than beating Iraq, Iran, N. Zealand etc. Keep your eyes peeled for a 'crazy' qualification group containing Israel in 2020. They don't want Israel in Qatar and are not afraid to ensure they don't go. The Qatari bidding 'system' will be continuing apace right up until they get what they want, who they want and WHEN they want it! 2 out of 3 so far...

The middle east nations and similar need to get into hosting the WC and reap the benefits of having the soccer publicity in their countries.
It means prestige to many countries and tourism and other benefits to others, not to mention human rights issues that can often get dealt with, if only by small amounts.

If we can somehow accommodate them by putting on a winter WC then we should. Maybe we need to be more flexible and think more outside the box but a few weeks difference here and there to our domestic season, shouldn't be too much bother if we are all prepared to give a little.

This is a horrbile idea.

Altering the WC dates because FIFA utterly failed in the simplest of due diligence, understanding the weather in a world region, is ridiculous.

That the tourney will even still be played in that place, after all that has been revealed, is also patently ridiculous.

There will have to be a major alteration of the transfer windows periods, as well as maybe even a 'special window' to allow teams that lose players to injury in a tourney mid-season to replace them.

Until other regions develop the best footballing leages in the world, that comprise of players from all over the world, it appears small minded and arrogant to suggest deference to the European leagues is anything but a critical consideration.

Winter WC is stoopid.

FIFA should be dismantled, everyone involved fired, and a new governing body should be built from the ground up. Call it FIFA again, who cares, but blow it up and build it better.

You won't find many here in the UK who wouldn't agree with you, but sadly, once again we are an isolated minority. Most of the smaller federations have been bought off over the years and have no intention of biting the hand that feeds them.

Luís Figo must be well advised as he knows it's all about money - his offer to distribute the $1 billion reserves was/is a masterstroke.

I should add, I'd love to see the TV debate happen between the candidates, Blatter would get roasted.
