Arsenal and Manchester United are tracking in-form Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle as they look at bolstering their goalkeeping options.

Tickle has been in outstanding form for League One Wigan this season, keeping six consecutive clean sheets to enhance his reputation as one of the best young goalkeepers in the country.

His clean sheet percentage of 70 per cent is the best in League One so far this season.

Arsenal have held a long-term interest in Tickle and considered signing him in the summer transfer window before loaning Neto from Bournemouth as a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale.

Reports in fact suggested that they were forced to go after Neto after Tickle turned them down in order to stay in the lower leagues for now.

Gunners scouts have continued to keep tabs on Tickle’s progress and they can only have been impressed by the England under-21 international’s form so far this season.

United have also made regular checks on Tickle as they look to bring in a young keeper to provide cover and competition for No.1 Andre Onana.

United’s current No.2 Altay Bayindir has hardly featured since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2023 – playing just 90 minutes this season – and the Turkey international could consider a move away in search of regular first-team football.

Tickle appeals to Arsenal and United due to his age (22) and potential, while he would also boost their home-grown quota.

Wigan are aware of the growing interest in Tickle and they are bracing themselves for offers for the shot-stopper when the transfer window reopens in January.

No one could begrudge a L1 player moving to one of these clubs. The only issue is his pathway to the number one spot. I’m not sure sitting on a bench will make him better but a loan to a championship club or another PL club - or even top flight club abroad could provide him with that exposure and experience.

From our perspective if they want to buy in January then they need we should be able to command a decent fee.

Shit like this really gets on my tits!

I'm not saying Tickle is a bad keeper he's decent and has made some good saves since coming in but sometimes his distribution is horrendous.

Tickle has the defence to thank as well for the clean sheets the back four/five have been tremendous of late closing down early and keeping attacking threats at arms length

Remember this time last year when the defence was all over the place? We were conceding goals for fun a keeper is only has good as his defence so lets not heap all the praise on one player.

If the lad has his head screwed on and I think he has then he'll see this season out at WAFC, the big boys will be back don't worry about that, even if we get a good fee for him will the money go to strengthen the squad or pay off what we owe Danson?

Utd current no 2 not used, should move on says it all. Stay with us for rest if this season Sam. Then if we surprise everyone and get promoted then another season with is in the Championship would be good for us both.

Was thinking about the £3.5 release clause on Hughes (& Thelo?).
When these were negotiated would the club not think it was a good and reasonable amount for a player.

We were only disappointed because we had seen Hughes' progression in a short period of time and could see his potential.

Still not sure what's truth and what's made up re transfer fees as its always undisclosed. I think our current management and owners are not stupid and would have covered all basis. Doubt we have or will lose out anymore

Did you write that article? as no reference is made to the source.

I thought we might get another month or two before the agent talk happened around the transfer window. guess it makes sense though with Sam with the U21 setup.

If the scumbags, gunners and toffees are really interested in Sam then the board must get an adequate fee for him and not let him go on the cheap. Rinse the feckers.

Thing is Ste will the manager whoever it is get any of the money from the sale of Tickle to strengthen the squad? I doubt they will.

It will go to pay off what the club owes Danson same as the Hughes and Lang money did, so the fee we get for Tickle doesn't really concern me.

James considers Chelsea exit

We have been told that physios have advised that the warmer climes of Southern Europe, particularly Spain or Portugal, could significantly aid James’ recovery and long-term fitness.

The belief is that the higher average temperatures, combined with the slower pace of leagues like LaLiga or the Portuguese Primeira Liga, may reduce the risk of further injury and allow James to extend his playing career at the top level.

Although the right-back is expected to make his comeback to full training next week, his return to actual first-team action remains uncertain, with no definitive date set.

Has he heard about Wigan's sub tropical micro climate?

Could just see Reece playing tippy tappy as one of our back six spuring us on to another well earned nil nil draw.
