Murphy claims Winks is game-changer England need

Danny Murphy has claimed on talkSPORT that Tottenham youngster Harry Winks is the midfield game-changer England desperately need.

“The one who I think has the capability more than anyone else I’ve seen in Winks,” Murphy said. “He’s got a confidence and an ability to play, see the passes, get his foot in and be disciplined.

“He’s got to get fit and get in the Tottenham team first and foremost. He’s not going to be Gazza, but he’s one of the best I have seen in terms of his all-round ability.”

He seems to me to be very much like Dembele, good between both penalty boxes, but lacking shooting technique and goals. A work in progress.

This looks to be the case however he is so much younger than Dembele that it is realistic to think another 20% can't be wrung out of those aspects of his game with specialist coaching.

I feel he'll score more than Dembele but I don't think we need more than 3-5 from whoever plays in that position. The water carriers doesn't need to be more than an occasional goal threat as long as they're doing their other duties. When Dembele isn't on it it's the area we're weakest imo, and Winks with a more solid defensive partner next to him will hopefully set the pace and pick the passes that break opposition down.

As some have pointed out, he did it well enough against Real Madrid, who's to say he can't surpass what Dembele brings to the team if he can stay fit and improve.

Danny Murphy was talking up Winks today. Rates him highly. Harry has already lost a season at a crucial time. He now has to go again and hopefully fulfil his potential.

Winks can be great...so lets play him if he is fit and all cross our fingers that he stays healthy.

I like how he drives forward when with the ball, so naffing around! He will turn our slow-ass, ponderous play into a more efficient, direct attack that is greatly needed.

Southgate would only pick a player if they were featuring regularly for their club who would only let the England manager have them if they were 100% fit. Winks is neither but ironically would still have been England best option from the bench in the 2nd half on the weekend. Such a shame 3 consecutive England managers didn't realise what a great impact sub he can be. They're restricted him to one England cap, where he started and was MoM before injury.

Poch fortunately doesn't have that challenge. He knows that all his coaching staff and every Spurs fan is always happy to see Winks join the action in the 2nd half of games. We've all seen it so many times and it doesn't matter whether we're losing, drawing or winning, Winks will have a great cameo, just like he did against Watford. In other games, Poch will start him and when he's been fit in the last year, he's mostly been one of the best players on the pitch and had some great matches amongst them.

Opportunities don't come along like this very often for English players like Winks. If he looks at who is ahead of him for club and country he has to believe that as he gets to full fitness he can own those shirts. It's up to him with every Spurs fans keeping their fingers crossed that injuries don't get in his way.

He is not the enforcer that Dembele is but is more likely to create chances. He is also more inclined to carry on into the box and score. We have to get the right formation to get the best out of both Harry's . I am not sure about 3 CBs doing that.

and best of all he says he's getting close to full match fitness and aims to get back to where he was...

That's great news for us and could change competely how I'm viewing our midfield options ..
That's great news Ex . I also knew you would come back to the bright side after your brief sojourn to the dark side :eek!::yes:

We need the insurance of 3 CB's in the team, with 'give the ball away merchants' Alli & Dier often featuring.

We were deadly with 3 at the back 2 seasons back, even when Walker and Rose didn't play. It's not clicked this season at all.

The aim should be to keep the ball with good passes in MF whether that be forwards, sideways or backwards. Toby and Vert don't need any help as CBs. Dier just in front maybe. Rose getting behind their defence down the left and Tripps crossing diagonals will cause their defence problems with Kane and Alli coming into the box. We can do this.

Have we played 3 at the back with 2 in centre mid this season? When we had that great run 2 seasons ago with 3 at the back we had Wanyama and Dembele owning the midfield and flying full-backs. We also had Dele, Eriksen and Kane all in the goals.

For me, I'd just get back to that with today's personnel. It would probably mean:

Lloris
Toby, Sanchez, Verts
Trips, Dier, Dembele, Rose
Eriksen, Dele
Kane

That would leave Wanyama, Winks, Son, Lamela and Moura as game changers / closers from the bench. The other thing that we learn from other clubs and the international team is we have to stop this sideways / backwards rubbish especially from the full-backs. Get the ball in the box and let Kane and Dele get on the end of it.

I was watching Jorghinho at Chelsea the other day and I did let my mind wander to an alternate reality where we got him. If you stuck him in our team I think we'd go very very close even this season for exactly the reason Rich alludes to. We could switch to a four and really have a go whilst retaining the ball in a way the players we have can't.

I agree. But the key to winning is to find a way to do it with what you have. SAF did that. Although his resources were substantially better. Not sure that's necessary now if you're focussed and healthy.

Well the kid has done it again, got the England call. Let's hope he stays fit this time and can resume where he left off.....replacing Dembele which it seems is on the cards now. I have noticed his performances getting stronger and his sharpness returning. He looked a bit nervy at first which is understandable I guess with his injury.
