Sadly, I was right when I said a couple of months ago that the fear was more surgery needed, and it is now confirmed he needs it.

Fingers crossed for him, he could yet still be the best Midfielder we've produced in the PL era...

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks is set to undergo surgery in the coming weeks to fix the ankle problem which has plagued him this year.

The 22-year-old was handed a new five-year contract on Thursday to end what has been a season of mixed fortunes for him.

It all began on April Fool's Day last year, when the young midfielder suffered a freak accident, crashing into a set of energy drinks bottles by the edge of the pitch at Burnley in a Premier League match.

Winks was taken off on a stretcher with damage to his right ankle, ending what had been an impressive breakthrough season under Pochettino.

He fought his way back and after finally freeing himself of the pain his ankle, he shone in the Champions League matches against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu and Wembley. Winks also ran the show in the match against Liverpool among other Premier League games.

Winks' form earned him an England call-up and he impressed again.

However, a late lunge on him during a match against Crystal Palace early in November caused that same ankle to twist underneath him and he had to be replaced at half-time. While he made appearances from then on here and there, he wasn't the same player.

Eventually Spurs sent Winks away for a change of scenery to continue his rehabilitation in Qatar, at Aspetar - one of the world's leading orthopaedic and sports medicine hospitals, which has a partnership with the club. The decision was then made that Winks would have surgery on his problematic ankle this summer.

The club has confirmed that the midfielder is scheduled for the surgery and will return for the club's pre-season in July.

“I’m determined to go forward positively," said Winks. "It’s easy to dwell on the negatives and the hard stuff that’s happened this season but all I can do really is to focus on the positives. I’ve had some great times so hopefully I can take that into next year and create more memories.

"I’m still young, I’m really happy that the club has made such a statement to me by offering me a long-term contract and obviously now I want to try to repay that faith by getting ready for the new season.

"The most important thing in the short-term is to get myself fit, get my ankle right and hopefully I can have a long, injury-free campaign next year, contribute to a lot of games and we can go on and win a trophy that we all know we want and deserve. I’d like to be a part of that."

I really hope he gets over this. Ankle injuries are a nightmare to get over. He is young so fingers crossed he recovers for the new season.

Hopefully he comes through, the next all important step is getting his confidence back on that ankle. Like you EX, I think this kid is special and could be great.

Like most, I highly rate Winks. He's potentially Spurs and England's best midfielder when fully fit. Let's hope this surgery works.
