People often talk about form. I am going to concentrate on our form, and let others compare with other clubs.
There is a school of thought that the team who misses out on automatic promotion will not win the Playoffs. There are other schools of thought whereby the last team, sneaking in on a burst of good form will. This year we have a 7th place team whose form has been, well not great. Looking at Lincoln's last few games from Easter, in the league, then we have the following.
3-2
1-0
0-1
2-1
4-2
0-1
1-1
W3 D 2 L2. 11 Pts out of 21
What does that tell us? Not a lot really. Yet, drilling into the detail it shows us that two of our three wins were against top 7 teams. One of our defeats was against the Champions and one was against a team desperately battling for league survival.
So how does this affect out chances on Thursday night. Well, what we need is a touch of flair, we need a couple of players to find that X factor, above their usual commitment, to see us home.
Essentially with us and Exeter we have two supercomputers each with similar programming, engaged in a game of chess. Each player immediately nullifying the move of the other.
After three games against Exeter this season the aggregate score stands at 3-3. W1 D1 L1. It is so finely balanced that if this were an election it would be too close to call, and no doubt be on its fourth recount.
What we need is a moment or two of flair. 9f unbelievable quality and skill that will allow us to break the programming and deliver that killer move. Yet, we need to make sure that whilst we do this, that we don't leave our other pieces exposed, which then lets the other player in for a run on our king.
This no longer feels like a game of football, but a battle of wits, guile and a case of whom will blink first.
Yet, who will win and by what method? It is too close to call. It is a case of flipping and unbiased coin and whatever side it comes down, will be the winner.
I feel that Thurday's game will be a battle of who blinks first, who will make the most mistakes, compared to the other. It will be an incredibly cagey start and should the scores remain level for any period of time, the tension will increase.
So who will win? It really is impossible to say.
