Why the Play-Offs will not happen

I know this is a risky meme for a thread. I know that this thread could go down in history as a sledgehammer to beat me for eternity, well the length of this site anyway. I know that I will be castigated for being gloomy or pessimistic, but I just see myself as being realistic, basing it on a number of factors, some emotional, some personal and some historical.

Yet, no matter which way I look at it, I just can't see us being in the top seven at 5pm on 5th May.

Why?

Am I being negative, no. We've have had an amazing season. Look at Grimsby, FGR, Cheltenham, Crawley and others. We could be Chesterfield, Barnet or Morecambe. We've won our first national cup competition and we have 8k + fans at home every week and even for midweek games to.

Yet, we need to dispense with the fervour for one moment. We are still a team in transition. We still have a management duo of whom are new to the FL and learning their full time trade too. A management duo of whom were very good teachers. A teacher after two years of full time work are still learning massively, they are inexperienced and will make mistakes and will learn from them. It does take a number of years for them to get up to speed and become experienced and graded excellent.

In the FL, our management duo aren't there yet. Don't get me wrong, their first two seasons have seen them develop amazingly and achieve some fantastic things...but they are still students. Still hungry, still learning and if they say that we are behind the other teams at the top, then I trust them on it.

I don't think our squad is good enough yet. There I've said it. It needs further work. It needs some fine tuning, it needs something extra, a bit of spice, class, X Factor. That can be added. We need a training ground to better our training. That has now been announced. Good. That will allow players to train harder. Train hard, play easy. That is the key to sustained success.

Why do I think like this? Well, because I have analysed what Danny has said many a time "We are someway behind them, but we are catching up every day. We are in transition, we are learning and building all the time. We need to catch up with other teams in respect of their infrastructure." That has been the consistent message.

Sometimes we have to admit we can't and shouldn't expect promotion every season. We can't always expect success, we need to experience what missing out is like right at the end, we need this team to fail. You must all think that I am now bonkers and have lost the plot somewhat. I haven't. For in order to have success you have to have failure and to remember how that feels to spur you on. Again another famous quote from DC.

I think this is what we need. I also think that over a 46 game period we haven't quite done enough to be in the top 7. Morecambe at home. It could come down to games like those. Too many draws and for some of the season we weren't quite sure how to play it. All that experience and learning will be useful for next season's campaign, for which I honestly think will be in league two.

Yes there are people who think I'm talking tosh, who will level me being negative. I am not . I'm just being realistic. We need to ensure long term success and that takes time, consolidation, we need to grow at the right pace, not a frenetic one, which is unsustainable.

So at present we are not quite good enough. Not yet, but I am sure we will be soon, in the not too distant future.

The Play-offs this year are a step too far, one year too soon.

Do I mind another season in the Fourth Division. Not really. I quite like it down here. After all, it's where real football is played.

We just need to balance the hysteria with reality. It still has some way to go.

I know many, if not all, will disagree with me over this, but when we look back in the cold light of day at it all, whatever happens now, it has been a fantastic season and a roaring success.

We still need that little bit of disappointment though, as it really fires them on for next year.

My final predictions for next weekend are therefore

Coventry 3-0 Morecambe (Morecambe relegated)
Mansfield 3-1 Crawley Town
Lincoln City 2-3 Yeovil Town. (Sods law dictates that Yeovil will decide who gets in the top 7)

UTI.

There's always next year.......

As ever, thanks for an finely written and balanced article Jeff :tophat: We've outplayed all expectations this season and anyone on this forum (or with even a passing interest in the Imps) would have been glowingly proud of top half a few months back.

For me, the Cowley mantra of 'Impossible is just an opinion' has seeped into all levels of support and the belief in the club, managers and players is astonishing. How different can it be from the Lincoln of old.... I'm not giving up hope yet and I can't wait for next week's nailbiter and hopefully the ensuing mayhem thereafter.

Whatever happens, I remain proud to be an Imp and what's happened this season is amazing.

You've been saying this for a while now, Jeff. I guess we'll see on Saturday.

i think some people need to expect failure so that they're pleasantly surprised when it doesn't happen. That's what this thread is all about.

I think this is very true. I never expect failure, but I am always aware of it, like a shadow. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it is necessary or even essential. It helps you to focus, to not become complacent and to spur you on for success.

But, should we not meet the top 7, then it's only a failure to get to the playoffs. That will hurt, especially at the last hurdle. That will be a massive driver for next time. That will inspire.

I failed my A Levels first time around..catastrophically.because I went to a load of Lincoln matches, home and away. I didn't apply myself and I kind of guessed that I wasn't quite there. So I took it as a lesson. I turned that around to an A grade and a C grade the next year. It drove me on to go to Pompey and get a degree, and the rest is history. I still remember how that felt, in August 1995 and I remember how I said it wouldn't happen again. I needed that to spur myself on. I keep failure close to me, especially that one, as it spurs me on to try my best and to do my damnedness to prevent it from happening again.

Life lessons. Can't beat 'em

Yes. It's spooky. It's a feeling I've had for a long time now. I can't quite put my finger on it...I'm not saying I am Mystic Meg or Cassandra....but the feeling has been growing for sometime and I seem to recall I have been saying it since January. It's the old sixth sense. I just can't shake it.

Last year I fully expected us to get promotion, post Burnley. I just knew it would happen, yes I was nervous, we all were. This year I just have that same feeling reversed. It's difficult to explain. I wish it was different.

As a City supporter since 1976 you always expect the worst and this is what this thread is about. Steal yourself for a bad result and anything else is a bonus.

I do think that Jeff needs a new avatar though........can I suggest a photo of Marvin be attached

( Hitchhikers guide not Marvin Robinson...though on second thoughts both might be appropriate)

Well a lot to agree with there, Jeff.
We are probably half way to having a promotion winning team. As well as our forwards have done (and Rheady has excelled as has Ollie), they are not a Lge1 forward line and to go up, that is what is needed. If Eardley and Wharton can kept, our defence will be right up there. Likewise i would love to see Allsop stay.
Basically a few extra quality players and we should be there or thereabouts as Keith would have said.
And Danny and Nicky will already be working on finding those players.
We struggled today as we have a few times. We had dreadful refereeing making it extra difficult too.
Can we get a result next week? Hopefully but of course not guaranteed. If we are in the play-offs its a one in four chance. So promotìon THIS time is still unlikely.
So Jeff, play-offs or not, the disappointment of failure is still the most likely outcome.
And yes the players will learn from that.

They're bottom of the form guide on flashscore....

Exactly. Which makes it even more likely to happen. Expect the unexpected. That's the rule in this league.

I want to be wrong I really want to be very very wrong and for all of you to tease me for a very long time about it. I still have that immovable gut feeling. It's normally right too.

Jeff, your extended essay must have taken an age to write, and nicely written it is. But for the next 7 days pop your head back up your arse. Forward the Mighty Imps. Remember Cawnpore (oops, sorry, REMEMBER TORQUAY)

The history of supporting this football club tells us it will be a glorious failure next week. The last two years teaches us that we will sneak over the line into the play offs in a game that we barely look like drawing/winning until the end. I agree we are not ready to go up however I really would like some more games this season and the associated revenue from play off games and perhaps another Wembley outing. Then a glorious failure would be rewarded with a further substantial transfer and wages budget from attendances at those games.

In a sense. I think this could be akin to the 74/75 season when we missed out right at the end. We all know what happened the year after. A couple of missing pieces for the jigsaw.

You mention Torquay. I hope you mean the Good Friday Torquay game and not the last game of the season Police Dog incident haha.
