VMC's wealth of Romanian pals continue to offer up top tips to travelling Blues ahead of next week's eagerly anticipated Champions League qualifier...the latest shout comes from Adrian P on a culinary tip ahead of a feast of football...
HANUL LUI MANUC (MANUC's inn - an old inn with traditional Romanian food at good prices)
https://www.google.fr/maps/place/Hanu'+lui+Manuc/@44.4312285,26.0995464,15.83z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xd644eea8957dfee2!8m2!3d44.429512!4d26.1022422
Take a table in the garden in the shade, maybe in the evening there are some shows with Romanian folk music and dances.
If you are curious about Romanian food, ask the waiter - but speak slowly!
You may get to eat some "mititei" mustard, "sarmale" (hashed pork+beef rolled in cabbage leaves) with "smantana" (sour cream) or "mamaliga" (polenta). The "ciorba de burta" (beef soup) is best served with sour cream, a bit of vinegar and "ardei iute" (hot chilly pepper - attention, it can be very "hot")!
From HANUL LUI MANUC you can take a walk north into the so called "Centrul Vechi" (Old Downtown) and choose a "terrace", bar, or any pub you find interesting. There is plenty to choose from.
DON`T take a taxi from the ones waiting in front of HANUL LUI MANUC, especially if dubious guys are insistently inviting you to take one. ALWAYS check the price per km, which is always painted on the car door. It should be around 4 RON/km.
If you like Lebanese food (the latest fashion in Bucharest) try NASIR 2, (Armeneasca street nr.8)
https://www.google.fr/maps/place/Strada+Armeneasc%C4%83+8,+Bucure%C8%99ti+021044,+Rom%C3%A2nia/@44.4364539,26.1095734,19.5z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x40b1ff39e97265bd:0x110922173902b521!8m2!3d44.4364875!4d26.11001
It's really very good food (try the lamb), good prices and a very fast service.
BEERS: All the beers are good in Romania and cheap. The vast majority are bitter pilsner (like the German beer). Recently bier blanche - white beer appeared as well.
Ask for Czech beers if they have them - Staropramen/ Urquell would be the very first choice in my experience.
Romanian beers are good as well - try Ursus, Silva! , even "berea casei" (the beer of the house) in Hanul lui MANUC.
Stella, Tuborg, Carlsberg are brewed in Romania and are a bit different from what you might know in fine places like Rusholme, Gorton, Denton and Ashton-under-Lyne. Or Middleton.
Enjoy your stay in Bucharest Pepsters!
