When the going gets tough, can AV get going?

Think saying we peaked too soon is the wrong way of putting it. We finally achieved the sort of performance, against Wolves, which promotion-chasing teams need. Our previous performances were hardly stellar even if we were piling on the points.

What we were obviously looking for was that level of performance to continue. What happened was that we reverted to our norm, and this time our luck deserted us. Wolves, Cardiff and Fulham are ahead of us for a reason. They put in performances consistently week after week which makes them the top promotion contenders. Wolves loss to us was a minor blip on their progress; even the top teams have blips. They then reverted to winning. We put in a single performance which showed that on our day, with the players we've got, we can beat anybody. We then demonstrated that we can't keep it up.

We aren't good enough. It's as simple as that. Wolves, Cardiff, and maybe Fulham are better managed and turn in better performances week after week. Warnock may not be everybody's cup of tea, but he knows exactly what he wants, and what he does on the training pitch translates into what he's looking for on the pitch. If our players look like strangers then it's because they don't know what they're supposed to be doing on the pitch. Their is no real tactical plan. And that will almost certainly cost us promotion.

Yeah, I kind of agree with that. Our performances have been pretty ordinary for the whole season, but when we put together that winning run of 7 matches post-Christmas, many of us felt there was some momentum there - not pretty, but getting the job done.

I don't think any of believed we'd be playing champagne football under Steve Bruce, and performances like the Wolves game would come around once-in-a-blue-moon, when all the stars were aligned and Mercury was in retrograde.

But we had found a way to win and were getting the job done. It seems like the players felt they'd made it after Wolves and performances since have arguably been back to those we saw at the start of the season.

I just have a nasty feeling about what's to come, especially considering the form of our rivals. If we can get a win tomorrow, however it is achieved, and we might start to believe again. It's all about the confidence at this stage of the game.
