What will the Sky TV deal mean to you?

Casperimp

Vital 1st Team Regular
From my point of view the Sky deal is a disaster.

I am a supporter who watches all home matches and travels to most games away bar the odd long distance Tuesday night match. The messing about with kick off times will have a serious affect on my ability to attend matches in person particularly away.

While we haven't been affected too much as of yet. The 5.30pm kick off on opening day is a pain and has already cost me money and hassle to arrange so I can attend in person and support my team. The Wigan game is just another inconvenience but if we do well and as the season progresses this disruption will get worse.

I don't subscribe to Sky and this deal makes me even less inclined to give them any of my money.

The stupid thing is the clubs say they need it but what will it actually achieve? I appreciate that owners/investors will see this as a way of having to pony up less of their own hard earned money to compete and I completely understand that. However In the medium to longer term it will see attendances probably drop not least because there will be less away fans as the hassle of constantly rearranging your life takes its toll. Then where will the money go? Well all clubs will be getting this money so what will they do with it? Pay off debts improve facilities? No it will go into players pockets so wages will go up significantly.

So in a nutshell the fans who attend in person will get p-ssed about, attendances will drop, atmosphere will suffer, the players will get richer and football will become increasingly an armchair viewing sport. Great!!

Oh and owners/investors will still have to pony up money if they want to compete because all clubs will just play an ever more expensive version of Top Trumps with all the TV money.

Yeah totally agree. Ultimately with the present situation more money coming in won't make any difference to anything except player salaries will it.

Hopefully it won't impact too many of our games but it does make the Championship a less attractive place to be!

For my sins I subscribe to sky sports and live 2.5 hours away so don't get to too many home games so will save me money as I always buy the ifollow game when available and means I can now watch the Carabao cup games. The earlier kick off times also make it a bit easier to come back for the day, drop the kids off at my parents and get them home for bed time so weirdly don't hate it but the atmosphere won't be as good of course!

Completely buggers me up. I live a four-hour (expensive) train journey away, I have season tickets but only get to Sinny Bank 3 or 4 times a year, this will probably now be zero as the only possible way to pay for the trains is by buying them well in advance. Trains will not sort out an evening kick-off or a midday kick-off. I understand that it brings money into the club but there should have been some trade-off for the benefit of supporters who want to watch the games live.

I will not be able to attend any Thursday games and I refuse to subscribe to Sky

In the main, I can't make weekday games so any that move from Saturday to a midweek will be annoying but other than that I don't think it'll change too much for me.

I'm local so the KO times won't impact anything.

Although I'm not gripped by the prospect of the changing kick off times, I'm very much in a wait and see how it goes frame of mind. Assess how it has gone at the end of the season before you write it off completely.
We had quite a few 12:30 kick offs and changed dates in the National League winning season. Did that cause people that much disruption?
You look at kick off times on the continent and they vary.
If it causes long term season ticket holders issues perhaps the clubs can be approached to discuss with Sky the possibility of codes to be issued with the season tickets to allow those who can't get to some home games to stream them as part of the purchase. Again all of this is very much wait and see

It could be a lot worse, we could be Leeds fans. Do they ever play at the allotted time.

Taken in the round, at current levels there will be minor disruption and some people sadly will not be able to attend the occasional game. Conversely the change to kick off times/dates may enable some people to attend games they otherwise couldn't. As has been pointed out it may become more of a problem if we become victims of our own success.

There are already a number of reasons why people don't get to every home game and the benefit of the season ticket is that you get a guaranteed seat with a discount built in to cover two or three missed games.

The important thing for me is that the re-arranged games remain flagged up well in advance with the changes well advertised via numerous platforms.

I am sure the math has been done and there is a financial uplift albeit I remain cynical about how much that is after loss of iFollow revenues, and still see it as a sop to keep Championship clubs from splitting the EFL further.

I suspect the L1 and L2 clubs have had to be pragmatic and compromise due to the power imbalance rife through the PL and EFL structures (so much for the suspended government review) and as fans of lower league clubs we are getting drawn into that compromise unfortunately. I blame the PL and Sky for any inconvenience caused; let's hope it proves to be minimal on an individual basis.

On a personal note, I have a five week cruise in January and February booked, so dear Sky if you could televise all our games in that period I would be very grateful as I should be able to pick them up on the ship :ROFLMAO:

How far in advance is well in advance?
We’re currently up to January with only one changed kick off (not counting opening day which was announced as 5:30)

I’m assuming the club will put something out about streaming of live games for overseas subscribers, ie, annual subscription, etc. At the moment there’s nothing on the club website, apart from ‘in due course’.

August to September changes have been discussed on this forum. Could you or someone point me in the direction that confirms to January is sorted please? I can then make my own plans including concerts etc

Will cost me £14.99 to get a Sky day pass via NOW instead of £10 on iFollow last season.

Selfishly I already subscribe to Sky so will save some cash. Looking forward to not having to get my laptop screen onto TV with associated picture juddering etc. Looking forward to better camera angles etc.
Mixed feelings about the commentary change…

Okay I wasn’t quite correct

Selections for matches scheduled after the first weekend in March will be made on a four-week rolling basis starting from February 1 (e.g. a selection for the first weekend in April will be selected in the first weekend in March).

Thanks, so in the next few weeks up to 10 Aug they'll sort out up to at least the end of this year. I await more stunning selections and grief

That will depend on the type of Sky box you have, Red. Sky Q you will be OK with. Any older Sky box (like my Sky+ box) will not receive the new SkySports+ channel/app.

So I'm down to accessing via SkyGo on my laptop and casting to my TV (if that works), or paying £14.99 for a SkyNow day pass and using a Firestick or Roku stick with my TV to use the SkyNow app.

I just hope the club will make more money from Sky than they did with iFollow, as watching the games on a TV is going to be a hassle for many. Watching on ipad, phone or laptop less so.
