We all have one or even more. Many will say that science is not a belief system but I'm not talking about creation and or the stuff of the universe, I mean the way you govern your life, where do you get your morale guidance and your personal philosophies from. I'm not suggesting that it should be any kind of religious organisation but we all need a push every now and then.

Do you take your inspiration from democracy, the classic philosophers, a religion, the law or do you base your values on nothing more or less than personal survival/convenience?

Despite some obvious hiccoughs along the way we seem to be able to live relatively in agreement even though our cues come from different places, even a combination of several, what's yours and why?

Moral guidance came from my parents when I was younger. Then as I matured I followed the "code" with out guidance. Now the apprentice has became the master as myself and my wife teach our children what's right and wrong!

Do you have any reference point or guiding inspiration in grey areas? As you'll agree, there are many many cases where it's far from black and white.

I don't think you need a religious belief to have a moral code. I don't blaspheme and neither do my kids. Not because we're scared of being struck by lightening for taking the Lords name in vain but out of respect. It's the same as we allow people their beliefs with out demanding they hear ours and at the same dismissing theirs.

Oh I agree, I'm not suggesting that people need religion in order to have morals but everyone has something that they base their way of life on. For some people it's the law that guides them, for others it's the society that they keep, a great example of that would be Mafia, they have their own code that they live by that for most of us would seem immoral. If we had no agreement on morals there would be anarchy, as it is we all use different systems to guide us and yet, in the main, we still manage to get along without society disintegrating.

For my own part, my basis is in my upbringing along with the society I grew up in with, in later years, the addition of a religious belief. This leave me looking very religious to non religious people and aty the same time many religious people view me as being very much "of the world" rather than of God. I doubt very much that I'm unique in this but I like to think I've found a reasonable balance that allows me to function well and live with a good conscience.

I'm going off at a bit of a tangent here, but I saw this photo and have had it for a time. I've been looking for a thread to put it into and hope it's ok to put it here.

We talk of morals, right and wrong, conscience etc etc and of course religion.... which borders on hypocracy, so take a look at the photo below........

This has been going on for years, but hasn't the 'modern' individuals who attend/take part here have a conscience, have morals? Or are they lead by blind stupidity and, sorry to bring it up..... religion?

As I suggested in my previous post, they are no doubt lead by the society they keep, that and the fact that people can excuse an awful lot of thing s in the name of tradition.

I have no belief system.
I would hope that I`ve learnt the difference between right and wrong, truth and lies, politeness and rudeness etc etc from my parents firstly, then generally in life,ie at school, then in the working life, then as a husband and parent and I hope that I will carry on learning for the rest of my life (supporting the Villa excepted !).

Of course you have a belief system. I didn't say religion. We all believe we know what is right and wrong, we believe we know hiw to live in society, we believe we know how to treat peoole socially. Even if it's not one defined system that pigion-holes you into just one group, you have a system based on something. It sounds like your system is based on your up bringing and the society you choose to keep. In which case, given time, if you chose to change the society around you then your standards would most likely change too.

Where the heck did you get that from..........innit!

Dude, rule number 24?! jeeeeez. :2:

I believe it was laid down by Tupac Shakur and certain street gang leaders shortly before he died.

Because I was curious. People have so many different motivations in life and I'm interested in both philosophy and psychology.

Why does anyone ask any question?
