what dead wood needs moving on this window

To me the squad looks pretty massive, and that might just be because of the amount of players loaned out last season that don't want to return and deadwood that needs replacing. As such, where it looks like 2 or 3 further additions would have completed the squad, if we moved on everybody we could, we might have a have a shopping spree similar to RDM.
There's arguments for getting rid of Gabby, Richards, Elphick, Bunn, Bacuna, Gardner, Tsishbola, Veretout, Sanchez (gone?), Gill, Grealish?, McCormack, Amavi, Hutton, DeLaet, and those are just the names off the top of my head, sure there's another keeper who's name evades me about to be out of contract?
So which of the above have a value to the team, who needs moving on, and who that we could seriously get should we move to replace them with?

I looked at the squad and I'd only keep about 5 players but don't have the stomach for Mass change again.

Hi Upthevilla.

if you create a New Poll using the New Poll button (next to the New Thread button) with the options you want I'll merge this thread into that for you.

Bunn has already gone hasn't he? Think Sanchez has too.

Gabby won't be going anywhere till his contract expires unfortunately and probably same with Richards.

Bacuna seems to be a Brucey favourite (don't get it... I hate him!)

Hutton wants to stay, and Grealish won't be going anywhere.

That leaves Elphick, Gardner, Tshibola, Veretout, Gil, McCormack, Amavi and De Laet

I wouldn't be surprised to see 5 of that 8 leave before Sept 1st.

There are 30 players listed as first team squad members on transfermarkt, 15 of them I would show the exit door and two I would give until January to prove themselves.(Bjarnason and Hourihane).
The goalkeeper upthevilla can't remember the name of is Jed Steer.
Mark Bunn has been out of contract since the 1st of this month, I can't find any report saying he'd been given a new contract, or an extension.

Totally forgot Steer 58, it was Gollini I was thinking of. It does emphasise our weakness at GK though. Only Steer available to us at the minute. Has Siegrist gone? Is he ready to step up if not? Maybe the Norwich keeper east angling for a move ( see what I did there ) :19: as 2nd/3rd choice might be viable?

In the cold light on f day, the squad is looking pretty poor isn't it. Hogan, Lansbury, Hourihane, Bree,Bjarnesen haven't shown anything yet and they're not on the list. Baker and Adamoah aren't world beaters, leaving Terry, Kodjia, Taylor, Jedinak and Chester
:10: :10: :10:

Note to self, starting threads leads to depression :21: Just edited in Jedi and Taylor.... Phew.

Steer had a decent season with Huddersfield (?) the year before last - wasn't he injured most of the season last time out?

He'd certainly be worth looking as as a No 2, but we do need a first choice - could be the difference between going up or not at the end of the season.

Amavi, Cissokho, Veretout, Gil & Tshibola can all go for me. Would love to see Richards and Fat Ross moved on as well, but I just cant see there being any takers with the wages they are on.
I dont rate Steer either, but as we have no other keepers apart from a 19 year old with no 1st team experience, he will probably be staying.

In the cold light on f day, the squad is looking pretty poor isn't it.

That could be said about every squad at this level though.

Look at the teams that went up. Other than Newcastle they were hardly filled with stellar names, and we gave Huddersfield and Brighton good games last season.

I think we have a decent squad at this level. Terry, Hutton, Chester, Kodjia, Adomah they are all amongst the best players in their positions in this league, then you have Grealish and Green who should be, and Hourihane and Lansbury who have been for other clubs.

We'd struggle like hell with the squad in the Premiership, but in this league where everyone has a reasonably poor squad, we should do ok.

I was a bit tentative over Gill and Veretout. They've done nothing yet but surely have some quality for this league. I think it may be too late for them but are they worse than what we have if Bruce can get them back, motivated and playing?

I'm probably talking crap. Players always seem better when they've left.

Agree Lewis.

I think both are far better than they have shown, and considering how shite we were in the relegation season (and last season, to be fair), I 'd be inclined to give them a chance if we can't shift them off the wage bill.

Veretout especially looked half-decent when I watched St Etienne last season, and he had Pogba in his pocket when they played Manure in the Europa League. I can't believe he'd be any worse than Gardner, for instance?

I think a lot of our players would look much better in a winning team, if you know what I mean.

We got a couple of runs together last season but the wheels fell off before we could kick on. If we could get a couple of early wins under our belt and start racking up points, we might see the best of players like Bacuna and Gardner.

We really need the under performers to pull their fingers out. Motivated, and we could win this league. Un-motivated and we will struggle. Bruce's signings from last season need to prove themselves then happy days, but a few decent signings this window will help me sleep easier.

I'd keep Veretout IF he has an interest (which from reports I don't think he has)

I'd also keep De Laet, Hutton (unless we do need to clear wages as you would think De Laet and Bree now are enough in that position) and also McCormack.

I don't know re Grealish, if a good offer came in I'd sell but maybe just one more season in his right position might be good.

FOr me, it all depends on why we are getting rid of them.

If it is a case of "we have to" then it is obviously the same old names for me as well.

However, if we really don't need to, and we can buy others without selling, I would be loathe to get rid of anyone to be honest. It's a long hard season, and who knows who / when we will need someone.

At this time last year, who would have suggested keeping Gabby, I doubt if one single person wanted him to stay - but he scored that goal , and who knows, someone like Gil may play one game and score / set up a goal that is fundementally crucial in getting us promoted.

Put it this way. David Geddis hardly played for the Villa, but when WIthe was suspended, he came in and scored two goals to beat the Blues -- without those goals ............

Is the second or third season when Jack Grealish has to make his mark......

I honestly think he is not good enough for the Premiership and doubt he is ever going to anything other than a "prospect" maybe he should spend a season or two in the second division, make him wake TF Up.

Personally, I don't think Jack has it. He's had enough chances now and never produced for us except in flashes. It's time to make way for the next generation. Green looks a better prospect.
