Which City manager said this and when?

"It just didn't look like my players in action. The lads had slogged it out for nine months, and then all had an off day together."

John Beck at the end of the 96/97 season?

The home loss to Rochdale on the last day of the season which scuppered any play off chance

Could be DC after that last home game v Colchester 18-19 (can't really call it 'last season' now?)

David Herd 1972. Possibly after the Darlington home defeat

That's correct. He said it during the following close season, referring to the 1-0 home defeat by Darlington in mid-April. It was seen as having ended the chance of promotion, but in fact there were still sufficient games remaining to have got the extra couple of points that would have meant going up instead of Scunthorpe.
