A jury has awarded $7.5m (£5.7m) to a customer who was injured while picking up a watermelon at a Walmart in the US state of Alabama. Henry Walker's foot got stuck after he stepped on a wooden pallet to get one of the fruits in July 2015.

There is a little more to it than that.

The guy was left permanently disabled because of the dangerous display Walmart used and are continuing to use. Walmart have done nothing to prevent for accidents of this kind so the judge included $5m in punitive damages.

The poor guy could have easily racked up $1m in medical bills and probably more than that in legal fees fighting Walmart.

I don't know the exact details of what happened but I'm sure the judge does. Walmart have a duty of care to make sure that their shops aren't dangerous for customers.

These cases are reported as 'frivolous lawsuits' because the big companies hate them.

Remember the lady who got a $1m from McDonald's because her coffee was hot? It turned out that she got 3rd degree burns on her legs and groin because McDonald's refused to stop serving their coffee at dangerously hot temperatures (somewhere around 93°C) despite repeated warnings. She wanted McDonald's to pay her hospital bills and they refused. Because she couldn't pay the bills, she was forced to sue. McDonald's then publicised the case in a PR campaign against freeloaders looking for easy money by starting frivolous lawsuits.

if only he'd made it to this aisle before melongate

Yup in the case of Maccies, but how do you accidentally stand on a pallet?

Customers also have a duty of care to pay attention. I smack my head off something when shopping, I don't instantly think 'how much?' I think 'f***ing idiot, don't do that again'.

In this case I'd have more sympathy had it been badly covered up.

Now that would've been the verdict!

Slightly disappointed that upon looking at this thread it's not about me.

Yes, I immediately clicked on this thread in the expectation you had somehow made a tit of yourself.

Disappointed to find it is no such thing. Can you put this right by sharing some embarrassing story? :3:

God that's faith for you isn't it. Is this how the Vital Villa family look at each other (walks of nodding yes).

Always happy to delight in the misery of another. That's growing up in Thatcher's Britain for you! :14:
