City sign Gabriel Jesus

Manchester City are delighted to announce the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Palmeiras

Gabriel Jesus is recognised as one of South America’s most exciting talents and he was named “best newcomer” in the 2015 Serie A Campeonato.

The 19-year old has signed for Manchester City FC despite strong interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world. He will join the team in January 2017, with a contract that runs until the end of the 2020/21 season. He will remain at Palmeiras until December 2016.

Jesus said: "Manchester City is one of the best clubs in the world so I'm really pleased to sign.

"We have many great talents in the team and a fantastic manager in Pep Guardiola that I can learn so much from.

"I'm looking forward to showing the City fans what I can do and I think we'll have a great future together!"

City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: "We are delighted that Gabriel has chosen to join us. He is one of the most exciting young prospects in world football and plays the game in a spectacular way. We look forward to him making a big impact at Manchester City in January."

Jesus is a versatile forward who can play anywhere across the front three – he possesses a low centre of gravity, an explosive turn of pace and fleet tricky feet making him a master of one-on-one situations as well as perfectly cast in the mould of the quintessential Brazilian striker.

Kicking off his amateur career at Associação Atlética Anhanguera six years ago, Gabriel went on to join Palmeiras in 2013 where he made a name for himself with a phenomenal 54 goals in 48 matches at youth level.

Unsurprisingly, a senior call-up wasn’t far away with Gabriel appearing for the first time on 7 March 2015 in the Campeonato Paulista, coming on in the 73rd minute of a 1–0 win over CA Bragantino at Allianz Parque.

His first professional goal soon followed away to Agremiação Sportiva Arapiraquense on 15 July 2015, the only goal of the two-legged tie.

Since, Jesus has netted 26 goals in 67 first team games for Palmeiras, his goalscoring ratio improving with each passing month of his fledgling career.

Gabriel has represented the Seleção at u20 and u23 level, scoring eight goals in ten games at international youth level. He is currently preparing for the summer Olympics on home soil where, together with Neymar, it’s hoped he will fire the team to the only major honour missing from Brazil’s collection.

Legendary striker Ronaldo is a fan, declaring: “I am betting on two great talents that are still developing but already show a lot of skill: Santos’ Gabigol and Palmeiras’ Gabriel Jesus. And they haven’t even turned 20 yet.”

City reportedly beat off competition from some of the continent’s biggest clubs to land his signature and so supporters will be eagerly awaiting his touchdown in Manchester in January.

One thing is for sure… City fans will now be keeping an especially close eye on Brazil’s progress in Rio this summer.

Jesus becomes City’s sixth signing of summer 2016, joining Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Aaron Mooy at the club.

Well, we now have two Jesi(?) . a God in Aguerro, all we need now is a "Hail Mary" and there will be no stopping us !

If you believe in heaven then I think we BLUES must be close to the pearly gates :021:

Dub, I was expecting your response as I was typing .

RS has been an abject failure since he arrived, and the only thing that is keeping him here now , is the fact that he is English.

There are still 28 days of the window to rectify that situation.

He scored in double figures and assisted in double figures for us last season, his form dropped off a cliff after Christmas but to say he's an abject failure is, with all due respect, pure and utter nonsense.

Besides you don't invest £44million in a young player then bring in arguably the best coach in the world for nurturing youth and then just sack him off.

There are reports that Sterling was signed with Guardiola's blessing, this hasn't been verified but it makes sense when you consider that Guardiola loves pacy wide players whereas Pellegrini prefers a creative type in the wide areas.

Granted, if he doesn't step up this season then his place in the squad may be in jeopardy but the same applies to every one of them.

Unless some Club comes in with an offer you cannot refused RS7 will be here for at least one more season.

He has as BD says had a half decent season, but name me one top striker who has not missed a sitter, they all have, the only difference is that it is open season for RS7 and some of it must get to him.

I just hope that he can block out the jibes and the insults and come out on top.

I am at least consistent, I was criticising him before he even signed, too much baggage of all sorts. Nothing I have seen on or off the pitch changes that opinion.

The only consistent thing about RS7 has been his misses.

I agree , PG likes pacy wide players, that is why he has bought Sane and Jesus. Back up out wide would be SN, or DS if injuries force a change of personnel and formation.

Disagree on the back up. Pep's wide players - Henry, Messi, Pedro, Ribery, Robben, Costa, Coman - what's the common denominator? Pace and dribbling ability. Can't see why he'd change that now and excellent as they both are or can be neither Silva or Nasri thrive in this aspect.

Both DS and SN have twinkling toes when they are not getting their ankles kicked to shreds, and then there is KDB who can go out wide ( Wasted in my opinion) and Nolito , who had a non too shabby Euros out wide for Spain. Don't be fooled by the number 9.

They do have twinkling toes which helps them twist and turn out of tight spaces and they also both have incredible passing ability and vision ( more Silva than Nasri on that one )but they're not the type that will take on a full back at pace.

I love SN but he does frustrate the fan because I think mainly because of the lack defensive work or his ability to do it week in week out.

David Silva, will always be in my best ever team to play in City colours , he is not the best tackler or defensively astute, but plagued with injury to his ankle which I think he still carries, purely because of defenders fouling him, but what a player.

It really will be a sad day when he leaves us.

We were accused of being an old side, but we do have youngsters in place to lower that average age yet still retain the skill.

I heard that players will improve under Pep and we will soon find out.

He does like working with young players - they formed the core of the team he built at Barcelona. The other thing with Pep - you have to be on board the train and committed fully to the cause. No room for passengers, dilettantes or egos. Just ask Ibrahimovic.

Brazil are playing S. Africa tonight in the 'lympics. Game kicks off at 8pm UK time. I can't find it listed on British TV but for our friends across the pond it's being shown live on NBCSN which also means there'll be streams available.

I figure out man Jesus will play.
