We gotta install microwave ovens

This new thread I decided to make reminded me of Dire Straits Money for nothing. So that's why I have given this thread subject I have.

Microwave? Microwave? What this about microwaves.

Whats your thoughts on them? Safe or not? I have decided to remove our microwave from the kitchen. It is waiting to be cleaned thoroughly before being sent to the charity shop. Someone will want it. I would rather a charity made some money from it than throw it on the scrapheap.

I have never really used a microwave much over the years. I am not keen on them and would rather cook on the stove. The most I have used it for is cooking veg or warming up beans and the like. Our 2nd son KK is the same as me.

Mr KK has always been a 1 for using the microwave. I hate it. He is now on a new high carb/protein diet with his health issues. Whilst I do the majority of the food, he does prep the breakfasts in the morning. I am not giving him a chance to warm his milk up in the microwave.

OTT? Probably. However he is my husband and every little bit counts. I am not going to sanction anything I think may under mind what we are doing. Cruel some will say. Nope! I am being extra vigilant.

His diet now is 90% if not more homemade food. He says ''he knows how a turkey feels now'' I said ''no you don't. We aren't stuffing you up to kill you for Christmas. We are doing it so you can live healthily''

So anyway the point of my thread is this: do you own a microwave? How much do you use it? Whats your thoughts on the safety of it?

Big no no from me!

Im not keen on microwaves either because there full of radiation and its important to let it cool down for a few minutes apparently. I have a habit of cooking a large amount of food on the stove but never on the microwave. I keep it in the fridge for a few days and keep eating it until its gone but do use the microwave for all the reheating. They are useful but its just as easy to heat stuff up in a pan. I think i will have to follow your example and get rid of it because it to tempting to plonk it in the radiation oven.

My late father used to cook bacon in the microwave swearing it was the only way to cook bacon. He was wrong. Are microwave ovens supposed to be bad for you? They have been in the mass market for 30 odd years and we haven't seen huge numbers of people dropping dead in their kitchens have we?

Only the massive increase in cancer

That's because we are living longer.

Cancer is a disease of our genes and over time, mistakes accumulate in this code. Scientists can now see them stamped in cancer’s DNA. The longer we live, the more time we have for errors to build up. 75% of cancer patients are over 60.

Any modern day microwave oven in good condition is perfectly safe as long as you follow the instructions for use. If you use a microwave oven in the correct way there is no known harmful effect on humans.

I get people telling me that they are concerned about wifi signals, and how much better they feel when they turn their routers off at night. I then show them that there are more than their own wifi networks available because of their neighbours. People will always be suspicious of new tech, and the Internet will feed those suspicious with conspiracy theories and bad science. I think Kefkat has done the right thing as she is uncomfortable with microwave ovens. Personally I have no problem with them.

I'm fine with my microwave. It's my Sony Walkman that I'm suspicious of. The cassette tape deck is always looking at me funny.

you and your bloody facts..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use the microwave to do my veg as I can't be bothered steaming for just one portion (although my portions are larger than most families :3: ) and won't boil as you lose the goodness from the veg that way.

Oh and sometimes I reheat things in it. That's about it really, not for health concerns, just that's the only use/need I have.

They have been around long enough now for any major health issues to come to light in my humble and the link from heathfield backs that up as well.

think they are fine as long as they are only used for health foods like Rustler burgers.

obviously anything fishy put into one of things is the work of the devil
hth

Microwaves are banned in loads of countries and in my opinion should be banned everywhere

Quick google search tells me microwaves are banned in no countries?

https://www.quora.com/Are-microwave-ovens-illegal-in-certain-countries-Are-they-actually-harmful

Where is the proof of health hazards? I see none. I mean, I've used them 30 years and there is nothing wrong with my health :3: :5:

Microwave ovens are great for warming up food but not much else, I don't use them for actuall cooking.

as said, I find them good for veggies, much better than boiling but don't cook anything else in them just because I prefer other methods for most other foods

So that guarantees cause and effect does it?

A simplistic overview that does not take into account what triggers the growths, as we are now aware many lifestyle and environmental factors have a huge impact on cancer rates, to state it's all down to age is just wrong

How many years was smoking promoted before it was deemed unhealthy?

As for those facts?! Are they really?

Or are these facts?

https://thetruthaboutcancer.com/are-microwaves-safe/

"My tests with an EMF meter show that even brand new microwave ovens emit significant levels of microwave energy, otherwise known as radio frequency radiation.

What this means is that when you switch your microwave oven on these EMFs permeate into your home… traveling through walls, ceilings, and you. These EMFs, though being in the non-ionizing range of the EMF spectrum, are not negligible.

In May 2011 the World Health Organization officially classified this type of EMF exposure as a class 2B possible carcinogen.

Added to this, a microwave ovens’ cables and motor also give off high magnetic fields, often over 10 milligauss. Exposures of just 4 milligauss have been firmly linked to leukemia. Not surprisingly these magnetic fields have also been categorized as carcinogenic."

"After the war the Russians set about researching the biological effects of microwave ovens. This led to microwave ovens being banned in Russia in 1976. The ban was later lifted during Perestroika to promote free trade with the west.

Their findings led the Russian government to issue an international warning about possible biological and environmental damage associated with the use of microwave ovens and other similar frequency electronic devices such as cell phones."

Or

Microwaving prepared meats to ensure sanitary ingestion was found to provoke the formation ofd-Nitrosodienthanolamines, a well-known carcinogen.

Microwaving milk and cereal grains was found to convert some of their amino acids into carcinogenic substances.

Swiss clinical trials have found that microwaving food increases cholesterol levels. It was also found to decrease red and white blood cell counts while decreasing hemoglobin and producing radiolytic compounds.

Thawing frozen fruits was found to convert their glucoside and galactoside containing fractions into carcinogens.

Even very short exposure of raw, cooked, or frozen vegetables to microwaves was found to convert their plant alkaloids into carcinogens.

Russian and Japanese studies have shown how food can lose nearly 60% to 90% of its food value when cooked or heated in a microwave oven. Significant portions of Vitamins B, C, E, and essential minerals have been found to be lost.

Food cooked in a microwave oven with a little water can lose up to 97% of its beneficial antioxidants.

Another issue with microwave ovens is that many people cook food in plastic and paper containers. Carcinogenic toxins can leach out of this packaging into your food. Studies have shown that chemicals such as polyethylene terpthalate (PET), benzene, toluene, and xylene can leach from the packaging of common microwavable foods such as pizzas, fries, and popcorn.

Of course, people can always take the view of those facts that backup their own beliefs, as is usually the case, someone who depends on microwaving will be more likely to look favourably upon research that allies to their own opinion :17:

seems the Russians never actually banned microwaves but it's a lovely story
