Critical_Spur sent us the following:

After the City game, some of Poch's quotes…

"It's true the squads are completely different but we are building the squad. Maybe today they have a little bit of an advantage, they are ahead of us because they have signed and kept the players that they want."

"We are a little bit behind but working hard to sign some players who can help us and bring some energy, and make us more competitive."

"It's not trying to justify, for me they were better, but our main players 14 days ago started training and it's very difficult to get fit if you only focus on playing games."

"We pushed a lot to train to train and develop our physical condition. Yesterday it was a tough training session and we knew it would be difficult to compete with City, who have a lot of quality."

It raises the following questions for me:

Players started training 14 days ago! ...

What's the norm for return to work after summer break? Most didn't have any international games to contend with. Did City players return to training a month ago?

Behind on signings...

Did our scouting team not identify suitable players? Were we relying on academy promotions? Or did we think that we had made it and there was no need to add? Is it really a cost/salary issue?

So, 14 days is obviously not enough to train and build fitness which means any signings will certainly not be ready for the start of the season.

We were only 'calm' about the TW just one week ago. Now we are 'behind'. Are we likely to hit a 'desperation' mode? We know what we did last summer! Sounds like a horror movie!

Questions, questions....?

Its classic Levy and his view on the world hasn't changed. He will be blaming MP for Sissoko failure and expect that all of the key names MP wanted are too expensive (wages). Levy waiting to see how the market moves to see if can mop up a deal. He should have already sewn up current contracts but hasn't (Toby needs an increase) i'm expecting some seriously miffed Spurs fans come 1st September (Levy will be blaming wage structures and inflated market)

It's about price differential. If we sell at a higher price and we buy at a higher price it's the difference in price that matters. Not the dollars paid out.

Secondly, Levy has openly and clearly stated that the stadium will not affect our transfer strategy. All monies received from transfers will be used for purchases.

The problem is not the amounts. The problem is the way Levy negotiates. There are few that can match his patience and his attention to detail. Right down to the last clause. Many people get exasperated with him.

That has it's upside and down side.

.

Surely you don't believe that?

Yes. I. do.

Levy makes very few public statements. He usually does to set the record straight.

And he reinvested almost all of the Bale money which I thought he would set aside for the stadium.

So the historical facts would indicate he is telling the truth.

Changed his tune in the past couple of days hasn't he....

Now the marionette changes his previous statement and says that we are “behind” title rivals!

Are Spurs candidates for winning the EPL title?

Does anyone have heard Levy announcing officially that Spurs are aiming to win the EPL title this season?

It is important to know because then we will have a clear measure to judge success or failure of those involved with the club.

80, are you sure we have spent all money from Bale's transfer?
Are you sure we have really paid the amounts announced for buying Soldado and Lamela?
How can you be sure?
Do you have personal experience of such transactions at this level and what it is usually agreed in such cases between clubs and between presidents of clubs?

Specially when one of the parties or both of them, but for different reasons, need(s) desperate to register incoming money to balance the books in order to get participation permission for next season's domestic championship while the other party wants to earn some black money?

I would advice you to find out what was the financial situation of FC Valencia and AS Roma at the time we bought Soldado and Lamela.
Also what else has happened at that period, connecting AS Roma and Spurs!

In another thread here over the weekend, I raised the question of the excuses made by Porky in that post-match interview. I find that he is always very quick to make excuses when things haven't gone well and, usually, very poor excuses at that - last year it was always that we had the youngest squad.

The season starts the same day for City as for us, and we have both done a pretty identical pre-season tour. If it is true that they are ahead of us fitness-wise that is not a disaster as it it pre-season but, equally, should they be and should tht be given as an excuse at this point?

We have a settled squad with only one first-teamer leaving, and City were integrating new players. Therefore is it valid to be saying that they have an advantage right now when talking about the performance of the teams in that game? We were virtually full-strength but were beaten 3-0, and lucky not to have been 6-0.

As for his change of tack from just a week ago with the use of 'calm' in every sentence when talking about recruitment and implying we are not buying to what he now says, we have been there before with him. To be fair to him, managers say all sorts of tosh but the sad thing is when fans believe it and parrot it on as fact. In our case it is the fantasy that we don't need to improve because we have been the best PL team for the last two years, and that we can't afford to buy anyone who could improve us anyway.

I agree with BA. MP does not handle adversity well publicly. Not sure about privately.

This is the sort of thing my article was trying to get across. From being calm and every player stating that they weren't concerned about the transfers and that they were shaping up well, to Poch now realising we are 'behind'. May be the City game was a wake up call. I just feel the longer this windows goes on without any in comings, the more the excuses will follow, ending with we tried and we are happy with the squad we have. All that followed by some last minute wheeling dealing with players that'll require one season to adapt. IMO, this will be a BIG season. Failure to consolidate could be very damaging to the so called project.

When levy says things like this:

"At the same time the academy is important because we can produce our own players. We don’t have to go and spend £20, £30m, £40m on a player and obviously that homegrown player has an affinity with the club that a player we buy doesn’t."

“That’s what the fans want to see. They want to have that passion. That’s what you get with a homegrown player and that’s why people love Harry Kane and sing that he’s one of our own.”

its clear as day he has no intention of spending much money in this window. We will only go for barkley and we will be frustrated all the way until deadline day when the deal will get done.

Then we will have to wait for him to get back from injury and up to pochs fitness standards.

^ That isn't any indication of what he intends to do. It is just a reiteration of the fact that the Academy adds real value to the club.

Poch has said numerous times since he has been here that he wants his signings in and ready for pre season. That's why it was obvious that calm talk was a load of nosh. He will be livid and rightly so.

Any manager with any brains would want their signings in early.

^ They were in early. Very early.

N'Koudou - August 31st, 2016

N'Koudou must have been the last day ?

I'm referring to players for this season.
