Watford v Swans

Carabao Cup (Third Round) next up on Tues night away at PL side Watford.
Loanee centre back from Watford Wilmot can’t play and anyway he’s injured, will Hoorn or Rodon have to step in? Watford still reeling from that 8-0 defeat at Man City on the weekend, but will probably play their second string players anyway, as will we, judging by previous rounds.

I expect a similar team selection to the last round v Cambridge, minus Wilmot. This was the team that night:

Nordfelt, Naughton (Rushesha 67’), Cabango, Wilmot, John, Byers, Carroll (Evans 73’), Garrick (McKay 62’), Routledge, Peterson, Surridge.

Subs: McKay, Dhanda, Mulder, Rushesha, Cullen, Evans

Latest score:
Watford 1 Swansea 1
Sam Surridge left footed shot from close range after 34 mins

HT 1-1

Steve Cooper:
“The performance was much better than result, that’s for sure. We were by far the best team in the game for large parts.
We looked like the home team with the way we played, showing bravery from the back.
Obviously we were disappointed to concede off a set play, which was against the run of play.
But we showed good character, we scored a goal from the move of the match, playing how we want to play.
We showed great bravery on the ball, we wanted to win and were unlucky to lose.”

It’s unfortunate that we’re out of this competition as it was giving our fringe players much needed game time. This has been a long term problem for most clubs since the Football Combination League was disbanded years ago. It was used to keep squad players fit in competitive matches, plus helping first team players achieve match fitness after coming back from injury. I never understood why they stopped it. Nowadays there’s only the U-23’s, where just two over age players can play in any one match.
