VS newcastle cup game

Still feeling really positive about last night's efforts, for a largely 2nd string team there were many positives particularly the debutants. My main concerns were Anderson & Dominguez who I thought were ordinary

thought Anderson was everywhere for an hour. domz was still his usual bundle of energy. gave a great thru ball into their 6 yard box but no one with the same idea.

well worth his place in the squad, as is Yates.

I like his passion as well.

Learned a lesson also flashing an imaginary card at the ref. He possibly would have stayed on otherwise.
And he showed he learnt straight away as he apologised to the ref and didn't make a fuss about it. Was a cynical foul though and wonder whether the other guy (Bruno?) would have been booked without Jota protesting

it was nothing, hardly a foul really. hope he cuts out that nonsense quickly

He had turned his man was about to put us on a counter attack. Newcastle man knew it and pulled him down. The fact it was nearer our box than halfway doesn't change the fact it was cynical and done to stop us making a quick transition. It was a yellow for me everyday and as has already been observed Jota was very apologetic straight away to the ref and made no protestation, so not sure what your beef is with him. I'd be quicker to praise his impact and goal then pull him up for this.

The ref was a dick tbh.
Whatever his interpretation of the game rules is, I don't share it with him.

Many of the players will be wondering why they're not starting on Saturday. Jota was skilled, energetic and nasty with it. I would have him stating over either Elanga or Hudson-Odoi. Anderson seemed to run the show, and Miguel looked confident. Being pernickety you could say his ten second save could have gone in a different direction rather than across the goal. After the initial first minute disaster Moreno looked useful , and has a decent long throw too. Abbott and Moreira didn't look out of place either, though Sosa didn't catch the eye as much, but was part of a "second eleven" that matched Newcastle. The pressing was great too, and even at the end we looked better organised, even though we were more on the back foot when more of our "first teamers" came on.

No win, but Nuno has some difficult decisions to make on Saturday. I would certainly start Jota and Anderson, and Sels and Miguel must be 50/50.

I also thought Jota was pretty decent in the air for someone who's 5ft 10. Brave, got stuck in, and some nice flick ons too, not to mention it was a pretty powerful shot that he scored with. Will reserve judgement on his accuracy until he's had more than one shot !
