VS newcastle cup game

Too many subs too early I think?

Didn't help

Left us with awoniyi barely able to walk but no subs left to bring on for example

Nuno - getting people minutes earlier on than he might do in EPL game

Unless that's all made up by 5 live commentators?

we were pretty dynamic yesterday, in between looking like headless chickens since the Geordies moved the ball very quickly and are very fast from the transition. Anderson and jota must have covered every square inch. Moreno and moreira were up and down a lot.

I can see why we tired, on top of the early season not quite up to speed.

I wonder if awoniyi is just out of his depth now because the rest of our players are that much better.

On top form Awoniyi starts all day long. So why has he hardly featured in games. Is it possible that he’s carrying an injury. In any event we need to question whether we can get a tune out of him, regularly enough. He’s had all summer to get over any possible injury he might be carrying.

On top form Dennis starts or keinan Davis etc?

Or going back long long ago - Justin Fashanu

Problem is they only show the top form so rarely and it's actually the exception rather than the rule

Same might apply to Taiwo maybe?

Too early to say on taiwo maybe

And to give second team players a run out. Many players will wonder where the next game is coming from

Many of the players will be wondering why they're not starting on Saturday. Jota was skilled, energetic and nasty with it. I would have him stating over either Elanga or Hudson-Odoi. Anderson seemed to run the show, and Miguel looked confident. Being pernickety you could say his ten second save could have gone in a different direction rather than across the goal. After the initial first minute disaster Moreno looked useful , and has a decent long throw too. Abbott and Moreira didn't look out of place either, though Sosa didn't catch the eye as much, but was part of a "second eleven" that matched Newcastle. The pressing was great too, and even at the end we looked better organised, even though we were more on the back foot when more of our "first teamers" came on.

No win, but Nuno has some difficult decisions to make on Saturday. I would certainly start Jota and Anderson, and Sels and Miguel must be 50/50.

Are you actually still suggesting we didn't play well in the formation?

Just like we always do at home when we use it?
Under the circumstances, we played exceptionally well.

Was that down to playing three at the back?

Doubt it very much.

The only discernable difference with last night's formation and Saturdays, was the players used.

We played three out and out central defenders last night as opposed to two central defenders and Sangare sweeping in front of them.

Other than that we appear to adopt similar formations when we have the ball and when we do not.

The future looks very bright indeed.

Lads - anyone who watched the game - if we did indeed play well last night with 3 back up centre backs, our second team and without MGW - sorry it doesn't count as I wasn't watching it live with you

Sorry I let you down

Just pretend the game never happened

Discuss something else
Don't need to get upset, mate.

Whether we play better with 5 or 4 at the back is a matter of discussion, its just, others, use the "you can't have a valid opinion if you didn't view the game live (and then sub-divide that pre-eminence with ""if you didn't see it at the ground cos the camera doesn't show everything your opinion is 80% true"")

Was just carrying that onwards.

Crack on with your opinion, bud.

We lost the game and looked berefet of chances and ideas after 80 mins, IMO.

But Moreira a totalky different player as wingback?

Same as aina. Same as Williams?

And Moreno flourishes getting forward?

If 3 cenre backs struggled together how would 2 of them have coped ?
Midfield covers defence, even with two pivots, and the 3 attackers drop back to midfield when we're defending...look at Elanga and CHO funnel back when we're retreating.

With 3 CBs it doesnt work, because:

1 - one of the three has no-one to mark/is caught out whether to press or move into midfield...they end up doing neither and taking themselves out of the game
2 - they sit too deep, thus cutting out a controlled press or mid-block with the midfield
3 - midfield end up covering too much space given 2
4 - front three end up having to press against six opponents given the midfield is busy covering for a centre back doing nothing.

It probably works when we're defending set pieces as there is an extra defender used to heading the ball away, mind.

Abbot got caught positionally for the goal last night. Almost got done twice.

Easy to say but murillo or milenkovic wouldn't have been done like that

I didn't watch the friendlies so first time watching moreira and nothing to compare to. Thought he did well after that first 15 mins.

Tbh I haven't got a problem with Ola as either wing back or full back. Think he always links up incredibly well and overlaps with CHO.

Have we seen Moreno as full back yet?

3 centre backs struggled to a noticeable level again for the first 15 mins. A lot of that seemed to me to be due to Abbott adjusting to the steep learning curve and not understanding his role. Seemed like a couple of times early on he stepped up into midfield when wasn't wise. Maybe he'd been given that license and didn't understand best time to do it. Not being harsh on him and these experiences are exactly what he needs to improve and show his potential. But basically I don't think matters 4 or 5 at the back there was always gonna be a level of misunderstandings.

Still feeling really positive about last night's efforts, for a largely 2nd string team there were many positives particularly the debutants. My main concerns were Anderson & Dominguez who I thought were ordinary

Dawson said it before the match. We paid for potential with anderson.

As it stands...Anderson should not be keeping Yates out of the team in my opinion.
