I hereby start what I hope will be a fruitful debate by stating we evidently don't hit the target anywhere near enough for the possession we have and the shots the players make!

I will look to make a comparison based upon previous seasons but focusing mainly on attack initially in these comments, Pep Guardiola has improved City's crucial goals per match stat fractionally up to 1.95 from 1.87 across Manuel Pellegrini's last season.

Pellegrini's title winning season averaged 2.68 goals per match which fell to 2.18 in his second season.

I thought that under Pep we would really motor up front and we haven't. If anything we have kind of stagnated.

No Silva in that XI? Blasphemy!

Seriously though, I'm not surprised as he just doesn't offer any goal threat and unfortunately DeBruyne seems to have been afflicted by this this season too.

I've mentioned this elsewhere but this is where I'm baffled at Nolito's non-inclusion recently. He has played half the minutes in all comps that both Silva and KDB have yet has scored just one less then the pair of them combined.

In fact with 6 goals and 5 assists he's directly involved in a goal every 110 minutes.

This, dub.

Having rattled through all this, as I just mentioned in the Bravo thread, I am increasingly more worried about what is going on elsewhere on the pitch than him!

Looking at Nolito v Dirty Silva statistically I can see a pattern emerging for when refs opt to get the book out. How many times I have read "soft booking" on our Match Day Threads!

The through ball stat is interesting there from Silva, that is his forte, or at least has been over the years, that perfectly weighted through ball, he's a master of that art. That .3 per game is worryingly low, that said, that could be as a result of players not making the runs for him as much as anything to do with Silva himself.

Another Nolito stat that I've highlighted previously is that we've won every league game in which the fiery little fecker has started.

They don't call him Nolito Dickov for nothing!

I think you just highlighted that through balls that can kill games are a massive issue!

Out of interest JB have you a stat for the number of times a through ball is played through our emmental defence per game?

The conceded through ball stats is very difficult to equate although its generally accepted as a City weakness. One would have to accumulate all the through balls of individual players against us. Can't find an "accompany opposing striker on a jog into the penalty area" stat either...

However, in the other direction our Top 3 City Through Ball Men are....

Bluedub you have really hit upon something here.

The drop in Silva's number between 14/15 and 15/16 is remarkable.

Even when appearances are taken into consideration, it's around 1 every 2 games last season as opposed to more than one a game the season before.

Just to reiterate, I'm not putting all the onus on Silva here, the runs need to be made for the through ball.

Precisely and we clearly aren't making them.

I pondered yesterday how to me it all feels like the frustration at our lack of intensity last season only intensified. The more I look into it, the facts are clear that we are treading water in key areas.

The club have a legion of paid stattos. Is anyone daring to point out how we are fairing in these areas to Pep and does he ask for historical data from their amazing analytical possibilities?

On the intensity issue there's something that's been grinding my gears all season.

Tactical fouling and the failure to punish it. Funes Mori was guilty of it the other day and wasn't punished adequately, as per. The ball is played from defence into attack, normally Agueto receiving the ball with his back to goal, what he wants to do is lay it off and spin in behind ( to make a run for a through ball ). What's happening is he is getting booted from behind and winning frees, the game stops, the opposition reorganise and the intensity in the play is killed stone dead. If ref's policed this properly and dished out yellow cards for cynical fouls this wouldn't be an issue because once they get the yellow they're reluctant to go through the back of the striker again.
