Virgin Cable

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Looks like Virgin are expanding to my area for cable tv.

I like Sky and the Sky+ box and have TalkTalk fibre optic.

What, if any, advantages would Virgin bring if I changed? I think one downside already is they don't have Sky Atlantic

Well I have Virgin but only because we have broadband and telephone as well so having the whole package makes it cheaper.

The V+ box records 2 programmes while you can watch a 3rd . I think Sky can only record one .

We used to have sky for T.V and those are the only differences I can think of.

will investigate price wise once they start touting it around. If nothing else I can ring Sky to cancel and maybe get a discount to keep me.

Virgin Atlantic isn't on it though is it? Do you get any other channels of any use other than what you can have on sky?

I wonder if cable is quicker than fibre optic, probably not/probably the same or similar!

I am staying somewhere with Virgin Fibre at the moment, and the broadband is great, but the Tivo box they give you is appalling compared to the Sky+ Box. It never occurred to me when I had it, but Sky just works.

The Virgin box seems so slow, and isn't as intuitive.

I would definitely stick with Sky, if I were you.

We had Virgin at the last house we lived in, but when we moved they didn't do the cable down our road, so we switched to Sky.

Have been very happy with Sky tbh, main advantage with Virgin was the cable broadband, but think fibre optic would beat that (although less traffic in the cables as opposed to phone lines etc I'm told). Also as sirdennis said, the V box lets you record 2 programmes while watching a third (not a massive deal with all the on demand and catch up content nowadays).

I would stick with Sky in the future if I had the choice, but DEFINITELY tell them you're going to Virgin and you should save a packet via customer retentions. :17:

I like the face that all the services are under one roof. I dont have to pay BT for a phone line either, as Virgin do there own.

There broadband is the best there is. We have just been upgraded 200 MPS from 150 MPS, with no extra charge. We are on full package though with TV sports etc and Landline etc.

At least look at it for the broadband JF. It is brilliant. My eldest is gutted as the house they have bought he can't have Virgin there as he was hoping to get back to Virgin rather than having to stay with Sky for Broadband

Agree that Virgin cable broadband was awesome, lightning quick. But fibre optic was non-existant when we had Virgin (5 years ago ish) so when we moved and ended up with Sky Unlimited, it was no biggie - don't download many movies, speed not a deal breaker as I don't depend on it for work, not all in the house online at once, etc.

But as kk says, maybe consider the broadband element, but TV wise, not as much selection and definitely costs more overall in my experience/

Will stick with Sky, always liked the sky+ box, read bad things about tivo before (I was moving to an area that didn't let you have sky dishes for the first 12 months and it was cable only... I can now see sky dishes up there so that says it all really!)

And this new fibre optic broadband is pretty spot on so think I'll stick with all I have.

Just wanted to see if there was anything glaringly obviously better moving to Virgin. Seems not.

Will let sky know I'm leaving though !

What a mess they have made... really not impressed.

That's very poor...it has to be said.

On a slightly unrelated topic, anyone every used uSwitch to compare utilities deals, and if so, was it any good?

Thinking of ditching Sky broadband in favour of BT infinity Fibre Optic, and really too lazy to work out comparisons myself :12:

Use Broadband Choices if you are switching broadband. They are good.

Also if you are a member of topcashback and visit Broadband Choices via the topcashback website then you can get £31.50 cashback on top of any deal.

I've just looked for you.......

BT Infinity 1 + weekend calls on a 12 month contract is only £7.50 per month for the first 12 months (it goes up to £21 per month after that but as its a 12 month contract you can just move again if you want).

With that you get.... £31.50 cashback from topcashback, £30 cashback from BT + a £125 pre-loaded prepaid mastercard.... so essentially you get £186.50 back

The upfront cost is £55.95. Plus 12 x £7.50 = £115.95 for the first year.... but you're getting £186.50 back so you're basically getting Fibre for free and end up in profit.....

Obviously you have to pay line rental but you have to pay that with everyone.

If you're not a Topcashback member please PM me first so you can sign up using my referral link so I get £7.50 too.
