Villa v Wigan - Carabao Cup Match Thread

One Bloody Number
Games coming thick and fast now, it's important to realise that these boys are fit professionals and not to rest all of them for the sake of it. We need to build some momentum.

Chester played in the Colchester game and has also played in all the league games so definitely needs a rest. Terry shouldn't play any cup games so that leaves us needing to pick a very weak centre back pairing of Samba alongside either Suliman, Toner, Elphick or Richards.

I'm worried with such a weak CB pairing we can't really afford to weaken us much more.

I'd go -

Steer

Hutton
Samba
Suliman
Taylor

Adomah
Jedinak
Lansbury
O'Hare

Davis
Hogan

Think thats a pretty good mix of youth and experience. Maybe take Jedi and Davis off after 60 minutes if things going well and give RHM and Doyle-Hayes 30 minutes each.

In order to keep some momentum going I'd keep to Saturday's as much as possible, change goalie if we must and for Terry bring in Samba. If they can't play two games a week they shouldn't be professional footballers. Most would rather play than train so we're told.

Play a strong team to start with, giving Terry a rest and Steer experience.
Get three or four up by half time then bring on the likes of O'Hare...RHM and Adomah to wreck a tiring Wigan with pace, energy and skill.
Sit back and wait for the draw for the next round.

Really don't know if I can be bothered with this one. I know it is free, but it is still £25 petrol on top of Cardiff, Reading, Saturday n Bristol - thats £150 in petrol alone in less tham 2 weeks.

Probably give it a miss unless kids are desperate, which they are not.

AVTVor crackly Radio WM probably.

Mostly kids and injury returns - 3 - 1 win mostly coming 2nd half.

all reserves from our 5000 man squad
unless anyone for first team contention needs a game

concentrate on the league rather than piss about with the mickey mouse stuff

The focus has to be building confidence and momentum for Friday though surely?

We lose tomorrow and we're back to square 1.

Just slated on twitter the ridiculous sponsor company. They are doing the draw in China, so over here it's on at 4.15am

The game's gone. ******ing ridiculous.

Just seen this JF. Clubs should refuse to put teams out for this Micky Mouse competion or field development squad players only and treat the FA with the contempt they deserve.

If our reserves can't get past Wigan reserves then that's not good .
We cannot afford anymore injuries to key players

I think we've got to be a little bit careful with this game. We've just managed our first decent win of the season and a loss here might turn the home fans on Bruce very quickly again. Some of us know that this isn't the MOST important game we'll play this season but I think it's quite important that we keep the morale high and that will only come with winning games.

We can't just accept losses if we want to build a winning culture at the club and beating League One teams should not and can not be a problem for us.

That said, Wigan are only recently relegated and have won four games on the spin so should not be taken lightly. For me, put out a strong team and if we look comfortable at 60 minutes, bring on some of the younger lads in place of our important players.

Yup.

It's all about the ££££££££££££££££££ now.

If Bruce takes a risk and plays the reserves, complete with a good sprinkling of youngsters, I think the fans will understand. He had a lot of support for the squad against Chesterfield.

What the fans don't want to see is a safety first approach. We have good players not getting game time. The cup is ideal for sorting that. Well worth the risk. And very useful in the development of the kids, which matters a lot.

I want to see Lyden play. He's not had much chance this season.

Steer
De Laet, samba, elphick, Bjarnasson
Adomah, Whelan, Lansbury, Green
O'Hare, Hogan

I'd "rest" Davis for this one so he can take the momentum into the game that counts, and also to keep him fresh for the game on Friday along with some of the others. I'd take Green off after 60 minutes, too.

As for the timing of the draw it is daft, but hey they pay the money to sponsor the competition so they can do what they like I guess.

Whats the answer? Restrict sponsorship to only UK companies?

Or in future put a clause in that draws must be made at certain times?

Maybe. But you can't blame the company.... maybe whoever drew up the contract.

Yup, up to them, they're shooting a great own goal at the moment as traditional football fans won't buy their stuff if they feck with our game!

We can't treat this game lightly, momentum is all and remember the anger after the Luton debacle last year. Fans want to see us win, so Bruce needs to win, while keeping morale high.

Keep the defence the same one that ended the match (less Samba) so that they can develop a better understanding. Screen them with Jedinak who needs a run if fit, so give him an hour, change Onomah for one of the other youngsters, play Davis to keep his confidence high.

Always going to be difficult with games coming thick and fast, but as Terry said, he was used to playing 60+ games a season at Chelski and all the "kids" should be screaming for an opportunity to play. It's the beginning of the season, so there shouldn't be a need to rest anyone yet.

We have tickets for this and are looking forward to it. Its amazing what one decent performance will do. I would go with

Steer

Hutton
Samba
Suliman
Taylor

Adomah
Jedinak
Lansbury
O'Hare
Birkir

Hogan

We need a result at Bristol Friday and that team will give many a rest ready for it.
