Villa v Peterborough, FAC3, Sat 6th Jan @ 3pm

Alert Team
Ah, the magic of the Cup returns to B6 as Villa take on the mighty Peterborough in the 3rd Round.

What do we think? Stick with the same team which battered Bristol City in order to build up a bit of confidence and a head of steam, or rest one or two with eyes firmly fixed on the promotion challenge?

I'd imagine JT will be restored to the side as he looks to build up match fitness after his injury lay off. Maybe James Bree will get a chance to impress? Steer for Johnstone so Sam isn't cup tied if and when he leaves during the transfer window?

Whoever plays, Villa will win this at a canter. 2-0 or 3-1 would be my guess.

:94:

We need to give them a good battering to shut up that Bluenose cockney barrow boy Fry. He would be giving it large forever if they put one over us.

VTID

We can put out a strong side based on the kids and more senior players who haven't had much game time lately.

Steer

Bree Elphick Terry Taylor

Whelan

O'Hare Doyle Hayes Green

Davis RHM

Yup, like the idea of playing the youngsters who are knocking on the door. It's the only way we will be able to really see if they have a rightful claim to first team football. I don't think this will be surrendering the cup if we do it right. I'd put Suliman in there as well.

The age old dilemma, rotate or keep the team unchanged and build momentum
Personally I think we should have a mix of the two.

Kids and fringe players for me. Should have enough to beat Peterboro who will probably also make changes.

Steer

Bree
Clark / Suliman
Elphick
Taylor

Green
Doyle Hayes
Whelan
O'Hare
Bjarnasson

Davis

Not sure about JT coming back in for this one. I have a worry that a few Posh players would love to take a trophy by giving him a good wack.
Agree with Deano and others, kids and fringe, we should still have plenty enough to win this one.

Me too. We want to keep momentum which means making this a good win, which in turn means playing a few regulars to hold things together.

Whoever we play we need to keep some speed in defence and also in the way we attack. Bjarnson looks as though he could come good if he plays fairly forward AND if whoever is LB can deliver; not sure that's Taylor. Davis and RHM up front sounds interesting.

no dilemma at all tbh
reserves and anyone needing fitness/a game
before the next league game.

promotion is all that matters

Well that could be said about every game JT plays in to be honest . Anyway Bruce has said Terry will be playing in this one.

Yes I was aware of that when I posted it sirdennis, its a stupid comment I know, but I am neurotic about JTs importance to us.
Its no coincedence that our appaling run started with him getting injured, and I would rather he came on from the bench, but good to see him back anyway, hugely important to us.

I'm with MON, I really don't care about the cup this season. I'd rather we didn't have a cup run, if anything. Kids and reserves all the way for me.

I'd would go something like:

Steer

Bree / Elphick / Terry / Taylor

Whelan

Green / O'Hare / Doyle-Hayes or Thor

RHM / Hogan

based on the idea that Terry need minutes and Hogan needs to keep scoring.

Bench would contain Adomah, Grealish, Hutton, Snodgrass, D-H or Thor, Suliman and keeper (Sarkic maybe?)

Not too fussed about a Cup run but would nice for the kids if we progressed and they kept their places, getting first team minutes and showing us and SB what they have in their lockers.

Feb 1961 FA Cup 4th round replay Villa 2 Posh 1

This game captured the imagination as Posh were non league in the days when you could only be voted into the football league. The old pals act ensured the bottom club (often Hartlepool) stayed in.

The official gate was just under 64,500 but thousands more got in. When they stopped the turnstiles turning at the Witton End fsns just climbed over and got in. Also a not to safe wall between Witton End and Witton Lane was was scaled by hundreds.

The full Viila first team played, Crowe Thomson Hitchens , and Peter Mac who bagged both goals. Well he would wouldn’t he, it was the FA Cup !

I would play the same starting 11 and the same subs.
Confidence breeds success.
At the time of that game we had a record 7 FA Cup wins. Pissed off with all these teams overtaking us.
Go for it.
