I've been a vegetarian for many years and am considereing going vegan, my reasons are not important to this thread. In order to get some more ideas/information, on Friday I joined 3 vegan groups on Facebook.

My first observation is how little knowledge they have, they ask the most ridiculous questions like [photo of product here] is this vegan? Seriously, read the ingredients. I'm astonished just how many make such a wholesale lifestyle change without, frankly, having a clue what they are doing.

Secondly, maybe I should not be surprised by this but they are so evangelical. If I want to be preached to I'll go to church. If I want to feel judged I'll go to a Catholoc Church. If I want someone else to tell me my motiovations I'll speak to a psycologist.

Thirdly, even those that do know what they are doing, their logic/reasoning is child-like and when they take the 5 minutes required to check something on the internet, they take the first article they find that fits their pre-conceived ideas/agenda best and take it as undeniable truth.

They make certain members on here look like well read, critically minded, well balanced individuals.

To be fair, there seems to be some reasonable vegans out there too but it's the nutters that "shout the loudest"

Come back Juan Mourep, wherever you are, I need balance in this nutty (pun intended) vegan world.

Won't you need to grow a beard and wear Corduroys VOTN ?

Yes, and open-toed sandals :3:

You want me to turn this chap into sandals? :10:

Vegans are almost as annoying as iPhone people used to be.

I'm very liberal. Each to their own. Still, you don't have to keep going on about your lifestyle choices. I'd imagine most of them are only vegan in public.

Our old friend Juan Mourep wasn't so bad but yes, it seems that the ones on facebook are as batty as they come.

I strongly object to that assertion! :14:

It's a matter of perspective VOTN. Vegans are passionate about innocent animals being slaughtered.
Fear could be posting something about disabled people, or someone could be posting something about racism, homophobia or rape. If anyone was to follow their posts or words with 'the disabled/ethnic minority's or sympathisers, rape victims, homosexuals can be so evangelical, preachy, judgemental blah blah blah' and be blasé about their struggles or dismissive there'd be uproar, but to vegans the killing of these animals is just as serious an issue, so to be fair they're no different to anyone that is passionate about an issue they feel strongly about.

That said, on the vegan websites there does seem to be a tend any of 'I'm a better vegan than you' and some vegans could start an argument is n an empty room and turn on their own for not being more active in trying to ' spread the word'

VOTN, watch 'Earthlings' before you judge them. I'm vegan because I'm disgusted by the treatment of animals and want nothing to do with their slaughter. I believe Juan is vegan for dietary reasons, but I'm not 100% sure.
In fact I would recommend anyone that is happy to eat meat, wear animal products etc to watch 'Earthlings' if only to get a different side to the argument.

I think you may have missed my point, I'm considering turning vegan myself, I was just suprised by the lack of knowledge, the way ill-informed people jump into a lifestyle change withough the slightest incling of how to go about it or what it will actually mean. They struck me as a bunch of idealistic teenagers (most were not) who were very judgemental and very ready to tell others that their version of veganism was best. Of course I don't really think all vegans are mad but it would have been a bit of a long title to describe my experiences in detail. There really is no need to explain or defend yourself and your choices to me, I'm on your side. And that's a big part of what surprised me, these people are all supposed to be on the same side and yet I found a hive of passive agression and preaching judgementalism. t's the kind of attitude that would put many off making the change.
