VAR - no thank you

People said that, with refs, you win some and you lose some. It hasn't taken long for the same to apply to VAR. Whether or not Croatia conceded a penalty, with the aid of technology, the decision MUST be instant. For me, it wasn't a penalty and I'm not alone.

I would consider having it but without slow motion or freeze frame.

The "penalty" today summed it up. Arm was not raised and the French player obscured the ball until the last split second. When looking at the impact in a freeze frame, however, the Croatian happens to be looking in the direction of his arm when the impact took place which makes it look intentional.

I think VAR is getting blamed incorrectly. The Human Referee is still making the decision, VAR just gives him more information to base that decision on.

Today was a shocker given that it is supposed to be intentional i.e hand to ball rather than ball to hand.

Its not VARs fault that the refs are making poor decisions.

Yep agreed. All VAR does is show refs up for being as incompetent as we all thought they were half the time. To have all that time and extra information to get the decision right and still award a penalty is shocking.

Its rightly showing that our refs need to be better.

Agree with this. Nothing wrong with h the technology or principle of VAR. it is just not being used properly. The referee didn’t give the pen onfield, so surely it had to be a massive error to overturn it? That clearly wasn’t the case. Also, why wasn’t it used for the clear dive from Griezman for the first goal? It was obvious and clearly and picked up by reply instantly. There have been a number of decisions in the tournament where VAR has clearly picked up fouls or serious foul play and the footage ignored - as well as the fina today, just in the England games, there was the clear had butt of hernderson by the Colombian, the repeated dragging down of Kane v Tunisia and a clear elbow by the big Panamanian on linguard right at the start which was clearly a penalty and possibly a red card - all ignored amongst multiple other.

I’ve said it before, VAR was brought in way too early. It should have been tried and tested fully across the world (and worked) before being brought in for the World Cup. Also, for me, it should have just been employed for line decisions first.

It possibly cost Croatia the World Cup today - certainly affected the score, which is the opposite of what the intention is!

Interesting though that in commentary Keown thought it was on balance a penalty but after the half time punditry by the grossly overpaid Lineker and friends he was singing a different tune.

I thought it was JUST ABOUT a penalty. The issue here wasn’t the penalty decision or VAR, the issue was human error in consulting VAR. Don’t let your own opinions of VAR cloud your judgment.

I agree with that. Had the ref given that, I couldn’t have argued that it should be overturned, but having not given it, it looked marginal and wasn’t very strange that he over-turned his own fair decision.

I think the people in the VAR studio tell
The ref through his earpiece that he should review the incident. This then puts him under pressure to change his decision as if there’s nothing really in it they wouldn’t be asking him to view it again.
The France 98 World Cup was fixed to an extent in that the draw was arranged so that France could only meet Brazil in the final. Platini has recently admitted this.
France benefited from the key decisions today which takes a slight edge off their victory I feel.

The only difference that VAR has made is to make it 100% clear that some decisions are wrong.

At least previously there was some doubt. Move on.
Now we get constant delays and still errors.

Plus, the one thing they could really use it for (eliminating diving and cheating) they are obviously choosing not to do.

Get rid.

I'm told that when I complain about pay for the super rich I'm just envious. Is he grossly overpaid? He gets paid more for his time on BT.

Is this a dig at the BBC or do you agree with me about the gross differences in pay across the spectrum?

Are you.a "looney leftie" like me for finding this unpalatable?

Ps phil, don't you agree with the free market? It's the best system appparently. If Lineker wasn't worth it he wouldn't get it.

I don't blame BBC presenters for being paid high fees, but blame the BBC for paying them. Employers are responsible for wage levels not employees.

The alternative to Linekar is probably some twat from Sky or BT. At least Linekar has played at the very top with a very good record.

Definitely not a loonie leftie, just a centre left loyalist. Just can't get it through my head that Lineker is the highest paid person at the BBC. And the amount that "there was contact so he's entitled to go down" Shearer gets is also far too much.

VAR works extremely well in the NHL (North American ice hockey) but i`m still unconvinced that, in it`s current operation, it works that well in football. The penalty given against Croatia appeared harsh and the free kick which led to the French opener was never a free kick, Clear dive by French number 7, cheating git.

I thought it was a penalty straight away?! The defender was moving his arm down in a chopping motion. To me it showed that in the action replay too. I didn't agree with the decision after VAR came into play though, because the ref was still unsure after all the replays he had. It wasn't clear enough, and so shouldn't have given the penalty.

Just teasing phil (or being a prat perhaps).

Stupid amounts of money. I don't blame people for taking it. I just didn't want the BBC singled out. BT pay him even more pro rata I think.

And Claudia Winkelman FFS. For what does she get that wedge?!
