A US woman has been awarded more than $100,000 (£77,000) after being severely scalded by a cup of Starbucks coffee. Joanne Mogavero, from Florida, suffered first and second degree burns when the lid popped off a cup of coffee at a Starbucks in 2014, a jury was told.

Remember people, plastics lids on tea and coffee cups are NOT concreted on, hermetically sealed or even glued together.

Nice to see the IQ remains the same after the spermicidal jelly debate.

'What you mean it doesn't go on my toast? Why didn't you tell me!"

I would be worth a fortune if I lived in The U.S without of mad things that have happened in my life

Land of the free, home of the brave, and filled with litigious idiots.

Bet most Americans get really peeved with stuff like this to be fair. Anything for a quick buck but legal.

I just can't believe Starbucks would still sell coffee hot enough capable of severely scalding someone. Didn't this happen years ago with some other place like McDonalds etc.?

Have a nice day and hold your lid.

Yeah, sure McDonald's had similar 3-4 years ago. But think that might have been the coffee was too hot and spilt burning somebody - or something equally as Trumpish SJH.

I don't go to places like Starbucks and Costa, but it has to be said I don't recall ever having had a coffee anywhere near hot, so she should count herself lucky.

In my experience, the only thing every served hot in these places is a McDonald's apple pie, which are invariably hotter than the Sun.

There was a woman awarded €40,000 in Dublin the other day after slipping on a chip in a shopping centre. She got €10k off Lidl in 2103 as well.

"A WOMAN has been awarded €40,000 by the High Court after she slipped on a chip in the food court area of the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre in Dublin.
Mother-of-four, Lina Misiunaite, said her ankle went over and she fell forward injuring her knee as she walked through the food court over two years ago.
Mr Justice Kevin Cross said Ms Misiunaite was an honest witness and he accepted her account of the fall which occurred when she went to get food for her children.
She made no attempt to hide the fact that she had settled an action for €10,000 against Lidl supermarkets after issuing proceedings over a slip and fall in 2013, he said.
The judge rejected any suggestion there was contributory negligence on her part over a failure to see the chip.
He also rejected the argument that the short boots with heels she was wearing were responsible for her fall."

What a coincidence - how unlucky (or lucky.....) this woman is!! €50,000. I think there needs to be better Health & Safety training in Ireland by the sound of it :3:

Last time I had a coffee in Starbucks Villa were a decent team......

I take it back these days and ask them to warm it up, that shit comes out cold af because people keep taking them to court.

I'm surprised that Starbucks serve their coffee so hot.

The McDonald's case is pretty famous but probably not for the reasons you think. It's better to get the facts of the case online because I'm working from memory here but; an elderly woman was scalded on her legs and groin by a cup of McDonald's coffee. She wanted McDonald's to pay for her medical treatment but they refused. She was in hospital for quite a while after being scalded. McDonald's had been repeatedly warned about the temperature they were serving their coffee at but they ignored all of the warnings. Even as the case went to court, she offered to settle for the cost of the medical treatment and McDonald's refused. The judge awarded her $1m and then McDonald's went on a PR campaign against 'frivolous' law suits, often citing the case as an example. The case became famous because of McDonald's PR.

In fairness a car ran into the back of me whilst I was parked at a set of traffic lights stationary.
I was obliged to report it to the Insurance company because the other driver was going to report it to his because his car was a write off......

The number of phone calls I have recieved from solicitors or accident agents has been disgraceful, the only people who knew I had been Involved in an accident were the Insurance companies..............

Wankers the lot of them.... they got paid for the information they gave to the canvasers and still wanted to put my Insurance up. They are a fucking disgrace, despite my requesting them NOT to pass the details on to any third party.

There's a documentary about it called Hot Coffee. I've not seen it but apparently it's meant to be quite interesting.
