One Bloody Number
Ok golf fans, who you tipping?

I've got 5 I'm gonna have a dabble on.

Dustin Johnson
Jordan Spieth
Justin Thomas
Kyle Stanley
John Rahm

Looking at the course I'd say there are 4 factors.....

1) It's long. I don't think you need to be massive off the tee, but you're going to struggle if you're one of the shortest that's for sure.

2) Wide fairways. I'd have been against Spieth if it wasn't for this as his driving accuracy is awful, but the fairways are so wide that i don;t think accuracy really matters. Just get it down there.

3) Big run off's off the backs of the greens.... approach play will be key. Looking at players with a good proximity to the hole stat.

4) Tough greens could level things out a bit, so not too concerned on the putting stats.

All in all the 5 I've listed tick all the boxes.

Might have a quid each way on Westwood too just out of blind faith. 110/1 seems high for a guy so consistent in majors and who's tee to green game is so good.

Yes it's hard to see too far past Johnson and Spieth being contenders. Although I do think at some stage, Jason Day will come good, and Adam Scott has been consistent.

I will put a few quid on Lee as well, as you say through blind faith and hope!

One day soon Rory will put 4 low rounds together instead of 2 or 3 and when he does he will win by miles.

Ooops... just realised Kyle Stanley isn't even in the field.

Shame... he has the stats to do well round here. lol

I'll replace him with Westwood then, thats my 5.

I watched Rory closely as I had money on him at his last event.... his iron play was shocking... I think he ranked 115th in proximity to the hole on his approach play.

Sounds like this course will reward people who can hit greens and get close to flags. The huge run offs are punishing and if Rory is as wayward again he'll struggle.

Can't back him based on that and his injury problems.

I've just had a few more long shots too....

So -

Big tips -

DJ @ 8/1
Spieth @ 14/1
Thomas @ 33/1
Rahm @ 22/1

Outsiders -

Westwood @ 100/1
Leishman @ 100/1
Grillo @ 150/1
Uihlein @ 225/1

That's my lot

Just checked in of the latest:

Rikki Fowler on 6 under through 14 holes - the record opening round in a US Open is -7, so he has time to see that off.

Very impressive.

Lee Westwood on -3 through 12, Jordan Spieth -1 through 10.

Outside that, it's a tough one to pick.

It's never easy is it Heath? Especially in the Majors.

I have a sneaky suspicion Rikki Fowler's star could be rising, not just on today's evidence. He's been "close, but no cigar" on a few occasions now. His start has been first-class.

I'd still like to see Mr Westwood (Lee, not Ashley of course) do the business.

Looks like a hell of a course though :10:

It's unusual for day 1 to tell us too much. We talked about Beef last night, and 2 friends have money on him. He seems to be doing OK.

Might have another look tomorrow night.

Rahm, Day, Mcilroy and Johnson all had nightmares.

McIlroy has been made to look a bit of a tit.. "The fairways are 60 yards wide, if you can't hit them you shouldn't be here", he said on Wednesday.

Yesterday he only hit 6 fairways on his way to a 6 over par score. Dick.

Fowler and Casey look impressive but I still have good hopes for Spieth. He played well but just didn't convert. He's not out of it at 1 over and @ 40/1 I'm tempted to have another dip.

Oops.

Just watching Tommy Fleetwood having a meltdown on 18.

Although having typed that, he's just pulled out a worldy of a chip and may just end up with a bogey.

Even a double bogey would leave him only 2 shots off the lead going into Sunday.

I've not heard of this Tommy Fleetwood before. Not a son of Mick is he?........

:17:

Met Mick once and what an absolute tosser he was.
