Benedict Cumberbatch hoeing what a tool he is.

Before people defend him because they like Sherlock and because he's a luvvy just think what you'd say if it was Nigel Farage talking about coloured doctors!

Must admit, as he was making a non racist remark, that is hardly worth any mention of a storm is it?

Weren't we brought up being told to say coloured, it then changed to black, which is fine, but he's just used what he was brought up being told was appropriate. He's not slagged anyone off, he's actually said we don't represent proportionally other ethnic minorities from what I could understand from skimming the very boring article!

He's gone on about the British film industry isn't diverse enough and got all self righteous and then said coloured and showed what a prat he is.

My parents generation used to say Negro and nignog. So if we take your argument Fear that's ok then.

They were educated to say those words though, not the latter anyway.

Just think he was clumsy here. All about context surely? Coloured did seem to go out in the 80 ' or was it 90 ' s which makes sense as we are all coloured surely?

If he was saying too many coloured in the industry, that would be different.

don't really know this guy, not seen him in anything or interviewed I don't think.

He is an Old Etonion , the other bloke up for an oscar is an Old Harrovian , perhaps the argument should be whether working class people are getting the chance of any decent acting jobs.

You do have to be either pretty thick, pretty old, or pretty detached from reality to think the word is coloured not black. He might as well have said negros. Posh tosser.

Oh goodnes me, he must be shot for using a politcally incorrect word ( in a genuinely innocent context) The bounder!

Surely racism ,as will all form of predjudice and offence caused, is all about the intent.

The real issue is people looking for an issue. There is still a lot of racism in the world today, but we are more focused on this non-racism by a celebrity than the real problems.

Wasn't the term "coloured" deemed to be the appropriate term at one point, and "black" was offensive? Now it's the other way round? Yes the term may be outdated, but is it offensive... no, apart from the people who WANT to be offended.

Instead of arguing over wording why don't people argue over the content of his words - that there is a problem with black actors in the UK film industry? That's too boring though and no one cares, a [non] racism "scandal" is much more exciting though isn't it?

It's stories like this that show everything wrong with society.

Can't help wondering if this is just measured attention seeking ahead of the Oscars, it was obviously going to create a story and open up for the conjoined apology story, doesn't really do him any harm, probably the opposite in the context, and the stories allow an advert for him in the Oscars to a broader audience, and the column inches, name banding, and people discussing him, like this, help his profile grow.

I give him more credit than to be using the word coloured in normal life unless he just arrived from a time machine from the 80's or has been impossibly sheltered from black culture in his toff life.

Love him or loath him is it that big a deal using the word coloured.
Really, is the press that fucking anal that they find a story out of it.

Half of the Blacks in Africa are either starving, catching ebola or facing death at hands of vile terrorists and this makes headline news.

the term ‘coloured’ is now outdated and has the potential to cause offence

So no one was actually offended at the Charity for Racial Equality, they were just pointing out it had the potential for causing offence, nice that the charity who raised the Issue also said:-

“Benedict Cumberbatch has highlighted a very important issue within the entertainment industry and within society,” a SRtRC spokesperson told The Independent.

He's apologised about the use of the word.

Sad thing is his message had good intent and has been totally lost.

Daft world really.

It's a mine field the way these words keep on changing...

I wouldn't know how to describe my pufter, darkie, spacka mate without offending him anymore.

You should hear what I call Jeeves and the rest of the staff.

AND they thank me for it, if they don't, they don't get their below minimum wages.
