Unsustainability of EFL clubs

Just reading a newspaper article based on an annual EFL survey of its clubs on salaries of playing and non-playing staff in the 2019/20 season. Not all clubs responded, but the majority did. Individual clubs are not identified. Some eye-watering figures, particularly in the Championship, where we already know that many clubs are running up massive deficits chasing the PL dream.

In the Championship the average basic pay for the best player in each squad was £29k per week or £1.5m a year. The highest paid player is on ££3.53m a year or £68k per week. Remember those are basics, without bonuses! The average manager salary is £878k per year, with the highest paid getting £3.46m per year. Other average annual figures include assistant managers £204k, First Team Coaches £113k, Fitness Coaches £80k, Goalkeeper Coaches £84k etc, etc, etc. Often dozens of support staff. Even the kitman is averaging £34k (with the top one on £56k!).

In League One two third of clubs responded (perhaps some of the higher payers did not). It does show a massive gap to the Championship salaries. The average basic pay for the highest earners at each club was £4.7k per week or £247k per year. The highest earner is on a basic £811k per year or £15.6k per week. The average manager salary is £247k.

In League Two the average basic for the highest paid players at each club is £2.2k per week or £114k per year. The highest paid player receives £234k per year or £4.5k per week. The average manager salary is £114k.

No wonder some clubs are on the verge of going bust.
