Ukip MEPs Voted Against Ivory Trade Clampdown In European Parliament

Ukip has been accused of "defending the indefensible" after it emerged the party's MEPs - including Nigel Farage - voted against a resolution designed to combat the illegal ivory trade in Europe.

Only 14 of the 671 politicians who voted opposed the resolution, and six of them were Ukip.

They included Farage, along with the party's deputy leader Paul Nuttall, Derek Clark, Gerard Batten, John Agnew and William Dartmouth.

Historian and columnist Tim Stanley said Ukip voting against this was "morally repugnant". Writing in The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, he wrote: "(I) expect Ukip to explain that they always vote against anything that expands EU power.

"As a passionate anti-EU conservative, I appreciate that stance. But when it comes to taking action against something as squalid as the ivory trade, even this rabid patriot would compromise my anti-EU principles. What next? Refusing to uphold a ban on child labour?"

Party of scum, always said it. Farage just wants to be famous. Despicable jumped up pratt who is given far too much air time judging by the fact (for things like QT etc) he doesn't even hold a seat in Parliament (and nor do any of his other vile cronies)

I think you're right VOTN. They should sort it out and stick with it..... which I thought they had until I read this.....

The only time I have really agreed with Cameron is when he called them a party of "fruitcakes , loonies and closet racists"

Amazes me that Clegg thought it a good idea to debate with such a fringe figure made them - a party currently holding a key balance of power - look fringe as well.

Tactical mess that one,

I'm not too au fait with politics. UKIP may just be a total bunch of *****, but Europe is the biggest evil of the lot, so as far as I can see, UKIP do a service in at the very least being an irritant and exposing what the EU don't want exposed.
As a 20 yr vegetarian, and recent convert to veganism, all because of animal rights/welfare /mistreatment/farming methods/cruelty etc to me this is a nothing story designed to make UKIP look bad. Are they pro ivory? Wouldn't think so. Does this vote alter anything for the ivory trade? No. Are they voting against the consensus to irritate those in power? I'd say so.
However reading this article, or skimming over it would lead you to believe they are pro ivory, and I expect there to be many more stories discrediting them in the run up to the elections, because the establishment are pro Europe whatever they may say. To me, UKIP are flicking the V's at the establishment, and all else they stand for aside, I think that's great.

What are the details of the resolution they opposed? If it was the stupid idea of destroying all ivory objects no matter what age they are then that is plain stupid. Seems to me people are commenting on something they have absolutely no idea of the detail of just because it is UKIP. Narrow minded?

Totally narrow minded when it comes to those petty little fuckers I'm afraid wurzel, I don't mind admitting it. Farage is just after, and got, 'fame' and the rest are fruit bats.

The vote was centred around recommendations made by Interpol, so it all seems pretty reasonable.

I am seriously worried UKIP will make headway in the forthcoming elections, and in the next General Election. It's an easy sell to the less well educated, Daily Mail reading Englishman. They tend not to look too deeply for the full story.

I'm voting UKIP cos i am sick of the EU telling us what we can or can't do, if we have to keep sticking to what them men in Brussels tell us to stay in the EU then we should leave, why did we fight WW2 we might aswell as just let Hitler tell us what to do diplomatically?

I hope they make enough headway that the main parties stand up and take notice, grow some balls and make our affiliation with Europe a trade only one and not laws etc.

Actually, yes, that could be the good that comes of all this. I don't trust any of them, but a good kick up the backside might push one of them into getting something done.

Has he? Care to elaborate.....

UKIP will come second to labour in the euro polls. Only a moron would vote conservative the party that doesn't give a tosser about anyone who isn't Eton educated or married to someone who is.
