Turkey

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
An interesting summary of what is going on in Turkey at the moment.

I would also recommend you finding on catch up Simon Reeve In Turkey (two parter) that was excellent.

All joking aside, very interesting read. And the Simon Reeve programme was excellent.

Plenty of parallels with Vladimir Putin as well I think, not least the flipping from PM to President and ensuring he retained the reins of power in whichever office.

This says it all:

Referendum proposals:

Prime minster role scrapped, new vice president role created

President becomes head of government as well as state, and can retain political party ties

President given sweeping powers, with ability to enact laws by decree and dismiss parliament

Parliament no longer able to scrutinise ministers

Parliament given limited powers to investigate or impeach president

I wonder what the Turkish for 'Dictatorship' is?

Yes saw the article earlier today and very interesting read. Easy to forget or not realise how vast a country Turkey is. Went there 2013 and 2014. The mugla province coast area which is where you will find bodrum and mamaris but we went to a smaller town called Dalyan near to Iztuzu beach We were there not long after the Gezi park protests in Istanbul and the asociated civil unrest but it there was nothing happening or issues at all. Istanbul is as far away from Dalyan as London is to St Etienne or Wolfsburg!.
Very friendly people and very cheap compared to european holidays and damn hot in the summer. Be interesting to see how things develop. Certainly if you go to the major cities or near the Syria border (der!) then i think there maybe danger but like i said its a vast country of which you would not know what the wider picture is while there.

I'm not a big fan of Turkey. We tend to have beef or lamb at Christmas if I'm honest :3:

I was going to do a Turkey joke too, however you ''gobbled'' up my joke :17:

Has JPA has said, it was a good read. Scary times in the world

Oh JPA the Turkish word for Dictatorship is: Diktatörlük (pronounced dik-ta-tor-luk) Google is a fab tool and I was curious :17:

Yeah agreed Melon.

Will be fascinating.

It would be a shame if they are forced to become more fanatic for the made up man in the sky as opposed to the secular state it has always been. You would think in this day and age where it's dawned on most of us about the fairytales that countries would be freeing up from the tyranny of oppressive religions as opposed to being turned into fairytale fearing oppressive states.

The Simon Reeve programme was most interesting highlighting the battle between religion and the more secular citizens.

Yeah, I'm with Melon on this. Between 2002 and 2010 I went to Turkey 4 times. On the southwest coast mainly, the likes of Marmaris, Antalya, Alanya etc. Fantastic places and very friendly people - and cheaper compared to the EU countries.

But I must admit, things are certainly changing there, and not for the better either.

Erdogan claiming victory in the referendum tonight, amid entirely predictable dispute over the ballots.

He wasted no time in announcing moves to re-instate the death penalty, by another referendum if he can't get the support of the opposition parties.

How the hell can this happen in this day and age? I swear we are getting less intelligent as a species by the day.

A lovely Country, being ruined. That's Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey off my regular destination list.

Yes the world as a whole is lurching more and more to the right. It's mad. Why does everything need to be extremes and absolutes? Stop the world, I want to get off as they say :10:

LOL. Why is everyone so angry? Most of us are better off than any time in our history, yet some listen to those that say we aren't? It's like it's just in our DNA to fight each other?

I hope to God they don't do anything to our beloved Greece and Kef: mind you they are broke so we should be O.K

............................................................................

Heath I remember many moons ago watching a Dave Allen sketch: it was about the end of the world. A husband and wife survived and went searching for anyone else who was alive. Ages after they found this man. Within half an hour they were fighting. The woman sat there and rolled her eyes. I think you are right it is in the DNA: cos nothing else makes sense

It seems that Erdogan has got his way and now on his way to making Turkey into almost a dictatorship....... sad days indeed.

I think we are looking at the problem upside down. Liberal Democracy has failed to achieve its aims and resulted in a kleptocracy where juicy contracts and tax exemptions are exchanged for campaign donations, consultancy fees and speech fees. Look at George Osbourne, he hardly covered himself in glory while in office but now had about a dozen high paying jobs.

People are looking for an alternative to our failed system and the right wing bigots are the only ones in place offering anything different.

What Erdogan can make of Turkey with the EU dream dead, a huge war on its southern border and emboldened Kurds in open revolt in the east, I'm not sure but the people of Turkey obviously don't think a liberal democracy is going to do the business for them.
