Tubbz mobile phone thread #2

Vital 1st Team Regular
Seeing as I couldn't find the original, I've started a new one. My contract has expired and I need advice. What network provider is treating its customers well/ badly?
I like the look of the Galaxy Alpha, but are there better options. I can get an I phone 5 for £22 a month with unlimited texts and mins and Igbo data. Any better deals about?

I am also after help. I have to buy my phone here in Belgium. What is the best value phone for under £150?

Do you go on holiday much?

If so I'd seriously recommend Three. They do this 'Feel at home' thing now where in about 25 different countriesa you can use your allowance for minutes, texts and data just like you would at home for no additional cost. It's brilliant. Was in Italy for a week and just surfed the web as normal for free.

As for phones, I think the Galaxy Alpha is just another name for the Galaxy S5 Mini.

My other half has an S4 Mini and while she liked it to start with its already started to play up after only 10 months.

Then again for £22 you're not gonna get top of the range so the Alpha might be a decent shout.

If you can wait a month that's usually when Google bring out it's new Nexus phone.

I swear by them. Always manage to provide cutting edge technology for the price of a mid-range phone, you get the latest version of Android, and it's pure android with none of the overlays the manufacturers put on.

I've had the Nexus 3 (Samsung) and now got the Nexus 5 (LG)... loved them both. Rumours are the Nexus 6 will be made by HTC.

You could actually get a Nexus 5 if you can't wait for £19.99 per month on EE.

1000mins, Unlimited texts, 1Gig of data.

Deano mate, thanks for the advice. I can concur that the three "Feel at home" is very good, my father in law had while we were on holiday in France.

What I like about Samsung is they guarantee their phones for 2yrs, and most cntracts for a decent phone are that long. I dont go on holiday regularly, but find surfing on the phone frustrating anyway. I thought £22 for the original I phone 5 with unlimited mins and txtx + 1gb data was a decent deal. Im pretty crap with technology, so I never use a phones potential anyway, but do like an aesthetically pleasing object with the alpha and 5 both nice phones of a comfortable size. Not a fan of big phones. The Samsung would probably cost about £35 on three with the extra yr gtee, the iphone is on o2 with 1 yr gtee, but only £22. Hmmmmmm, dilemna dilemna

Where's the dilemma?

I'm fed up with 3... when I'm abroad half the texts won't go, their customer service is stink and their signal dodgy at times where I see others using their phones, mine says out of signal.

I think I might move to 02 next time.

I'm on Three and Nat is on O2. She hates it.

I think EE is probably the best for signal as it's combined all Orange and T-Mobile masts together.

I personally don't think there is a best provider though, it's different for everyone. Free worldwide roaming for me is brilliant though, given that I'm an international jetsetter. ;-)

Might look at EE then.

I just don't get why my texts won't send when abroad, or a few do then it stops. I've asked them over and over but their customer 'service' is pathetic.

Annoying!

It isn't the phone either as it did the same on my last one.

We love 02. Never been with anyone else nor we aren't about to change. It's all personal choice

My daughter in law changed to EE and has had nothing but trouble, so again down to personal choice and experience

Where's the dilemma?

I like the Samsung and it's got 2 yrs guarantee. My last 2 phones were Samsung so thats 4yrs 'familiarity' with their products and operating system. It would be unlimited minutes, texts and internet, though Its pretty much replaced the home phone, I'm not a big tester or internet user. The Apple will be a minimum of £260 cheaper over the contract, possibly up to about £350 ish and with no upfront with no purchase cost, but only 1yr guarantee. It's unlimited minutes and texts, but only 1gb of data which MAY be enough, but unless you keep an active eye on it, there's the risk of going over and they hammer you hard if you do. The apple is on O2 and the Samsung on Three, so at least I can ditch EE who's customer service I've found to be abysmal.

IPhone and a separate insurance cover after the first year, 1gb of data is enough if you're not a big user.

The down side obviously though is that it is an iPhone : )

Phone signal is ok, used to struggle on 3G though. Been with them the last 4yrs, not out of service or loyalty etc, just they were doing the best offer at the time. Girlfriend swears by 'three', and that has seemed fine when I've encountered any problems. When contract ended a couple of months ago, I took a sim only 4g deal out and that seemed really fast, but dropped my phone and broke the screen so using an old phone now and can't really give you too much feedback as I've mostly used the service on an inferior device. Their customer service is crap though, and I don't agree with them charging you 50p to jump the customer services queue. Reason enough to tell them to sling it the cheeky bar stewards

I did the opposite to you 2 months ago Fear, left O2 to go to 3, and phone-wise it's the best thing I've ever done! I've got unlimited texts and unlimited 4G data now on one of their SIM-only deals for £15 a month.

If you haven't changed your SIM card for a long time, you might need a new, updated one. That could be one reason why your signal's bad.
