"Barcelona's president on brink as club call 'extraordinary' meeting"
Associated Press

Barcelona have called an "extraordinary" board meeting, fuelling Spanish media reports that the club president Sandro Rosell is under pressure to step down due to the lawsuit over Neymar's transfer.

Barcelona have said in a statement that the meeting will take place on Thursday afternoon, a day after a judge agreed to hear a lawsuit brought by a Barcelona club member over the cost of Neymar's signing.

A club member, Jordi Cases, alleges Rosell misappropriated funds by hiding the real cost of the transfer behind false contracts.

Rosell said earlier this week that the cost of €57m (then £44.6m), announced at Neymar's presentation, is correct.

Spanish media have speculated that Rosell may resign to save the club's image ahead of what could be a lengthy legal battle.

What is the issue with the Neymar transfer, exactly? Did they just not announce the "full" cost of the transfer, or did they hide money from authorities, etc? I'm confused as to why this is a legal issue.

as usual PBM, it is all about the money

At the heart of the issue is a debate over the exact amount of money spent by the club to bring Neymar to the club over the summer. For the past few weeks, Barca have stubbornly insisted that the reported €57 million price tag was accurate despite more and more reports claiming the number is closer to €95 million. In addition, there are documents that have been leaked that appear to show Neymar and his family receiving nearly €51 million in fees and commissions.

A story published on Tuesday by El Mundo combined with a Madrid-based court beginning an investigation this week has brought the story to a full boil. Now on Thursday there are reports from Spain that Barcelona's board has called an emergency board meeting this evening -- Catalan time -- and that the resignation of club president Sandro Rosell is imminent.

According to the El Mundo report the €95 million deal included €40 million for the Neymar, €17 million to his former club Santos, €7.9 million for the right to three young Santos players, €9 million for a friendly between the teams, €8.5 million in commissions to Neymar's father, €2.6 million in agent fees and another €10 million for a signing bonus.

The club's initial response to the story was to claim it was false but as the week has progressed, it's starting to look more and more like it's quite true.

As for the court investigation, judge Pablo Ruz agreed to accept a petition requesting that the contract be looked in to. The judge has requested documents from FIFA and Neymar & Neymar -- an agency run by Neymar's father -- for documents related to the transfer. In addition, the court has asked to see information related to the reported side agreements made between the Santos and Barcelona.

If it's eventually proven that Barcelona made illegal payments to Neymar/Santos/Third parties, they could be in quite a bit of trouble, as that is blatant fraud.

Not that I expect anything other than a slap on the wrist for one of the world's darling clubs of course...

Could you imagine if this was an English club being accused of this? Not just us, but any club in the country. I would imagine UEFA would come down on them hard, regardless of their "history".

However, like fifth said, I doubt anything happens to them at all. The man "responsible" will resign and the powers that be will just laugh it all off. Double standard.

So has the FFP been broke too? Cos if they have lied about the transfer fee then they must have broke the FFP regulations too,and the Scots relegated Rangers 3 divisions for similar indescretions........

Here is the deal Barcelona we will help you out and get the best lawyer in free of charge if you give us Messi and we might even throw in Javi Garcia and Edin Dzeko.

Reuters, Thursday January 23 2014

BARCELONA, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said on Thursday he had resigned in the aftermath of a Spanish court's decision to investigate last year's signing of Brazil forward Neymar.

"The success the club has had has also come along with difficult moments for myself and my family," Rosell told a news conference after a board meeting held by the Spanish champions.

"There have been threats and accusations which make you consider your position including the claim of misappropriation of funds and the court case. I've always stated that we acted correctly with the Neymar transfer."

This should soften relations with City and Barca, it was that Rosell that had it in for Soriano. He seems a bit of a dick, stripped Cryuff of his honorary presidency when he got elected, serious power struggle going on there.

Barca now have two issues. Messi is pissed because Neymar is on more than him and the Tax man wants his full share.

In Spain the Tax man goes to the club and says we want this amount from you, for the players and employees and ground tax in 1 figure, they do not care who or what pays the bill as long as its paid,
My understanding of the Messi case is the club refused to pay some or part of the tax bill so the Government are going after the players, and Messi thought it was paid by the club like it was before the bankers crash, the same will be happening to Real, Atletico, and all the other clubs to get their taxes right and pay their dues,
its just that Messi is the high profile player to date others will surely follow......

There is rumblings of the other clubs not happy with way the Tv deals money is allocated, Barca and Real tske 90% of the money with other 10% divided by the rest, they want a deal similar to the EPL but the top 2 are refusing to budge...... cant tbink why?
