It's that time of the year again. The transfer window is about to open, and the media are already pushing stories left and right.

While the transfer window hasn't even opened yet, it seems that some teams are, once again, wasting no time in trying to improve their squad.

As always, there is a belief that the biggest clubs with the deepest pockets have an advantage, because they get the first picks in the transfer market. This year is no exception it seems, with our top 6 rivals all quite active already.

Manchester United have already announced the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica, while their neighbours City have already signed goalkeeper Ederson from Benfica and midfielder Bernardo Silva from Monaco. Liverpool have brought in Mohamed Salah from Roma, and Arsenal have already signed defender Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer from Schalke, with strong rumours about Monaco's Thomas Lemar and Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette being on the way.

Chelsea are themselves reportedly very close to signing Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, who has completed a medical. However, even some of the PL's more modest teams have already been very active. Everton have signed Jordan Pickford from Sunderland, as well as Ajax captain and midfielder Davy Klaasen, with Burnley defender Michael Keane apparently very close to signing.

Other notable moves include Bournemouth signing striker Jermain Defoe on a free transfer from Sunderland, and keeper Asmir Begovic from Chelsea. Leicester have already splashed out on defender Harry Maguire from Hull, and West Ham have signed Pablo Zabaleta on a free transfer from Man City.

In comparison, the activity at Spurs Lodge has been very quiet. Given the flurry of activity around us, is it already time to ask questions? Have we already missed out on players who could have improved us? Are we again going to wait until the dying weeks of the window hoping to find bargains, at the risk of missing out on more targets and/or negatively impacting our results in the league? Or should we all acknowledge that the window hasn't even officially opened yet, and that we still have at least 4 weeks ahead of us to strengthen the squad in time for the beginning of the season?

New players need a minimum of 3 weeks training before the season starts. Ideally 4-5 weeks. Not quite time to be worried but with what is going on and all the rumours it does look like it will be a long summer.

If Harry Kane starts scoring immediately there won't be an in for the new guys until our schedule heats up in the later rounds of the CL anyway.

For once I think we have the time.

A lot of the 'big' clubs mentioned have a faily clear need for major signings (quantity / quality) as they have all been off of their usual standards lately, so need to get a lot of business done. In contrast we don't require major surgery and don't have owners who like to spend much beyond net.

Probably we are still looking for a benchwarmer or two whose name starts with N' .......... and they aren't easy to find.

Signing of new players is determined by the ambition and the set targets for glory on the field as well the financial capacity and the willingness of the owners of a football club to use that capacity for the sporting benefit and improvement of the club in order to increase the possibility to achieve those targets.

Ambition for glory on the field, financial capacity and willingness to use that capacity for the sporting benefit of the club on behalf of the owners, are the key words.

The rest are only technical issues.
