Transfer rumors

Given that the market does not officially open until 1st June that prediction would hardly be a surprise.

However, I have received some very top secret information relating to MoNs transfer plans; he has two high profile signings lined up with three "statement of intent" loans deals to follow.

MoN has been calling on all of his contacts to make sure his one last throw of the dice ends up successfully

He has also turned down the Russian keeper, Yuri Lodygin, who ended up at Olympiakos on loan last season; apparently a deal was in place for him to sign for us on a free in the close season until MoN pulled the plug on it.

Maybe stop listening to Jom and Sniffer quire so much...

From a much more reliable source.

I can buy the two high profile signings bit because MoN will have had irons in the fire for a while now; the bit about the loans, however, smacks of embellishment.

Clubs will not know for definite who they are signing or selling, so they wont know who will be available for loan; unless its an up and coming player they want to get experience.

That type of loan would not tick the "statement of intent" box for me

usual hasbeens, neverbeens and mercenaries then. When will we learn that good scouting and youth mixed with a little experience is the way to go? Norwich spent less on the whole squad then we spent on Carvalho.

Norwich also sold Maddison & Murphy for big money and brought in cheap replacements! Sheff Utd spent bugger all and have been promoted with a team of nobodies!

I love it when people start resolving that the way to get promoted is to spend as little as possible....

Norwich's £6m spend is as high as our highest spend for years before this one.

The season before they spent £15m

The season before that, £25m

The season before that? £48m

How much were we spending in 2015-18?

They sold a small.number of big ticket players to push the net spend down. But in that time, we sold se.big ticket players too and spent fuck all from it

The season before that?

Not advocating that Pope, but find it interesting that those two have been promoted spending very little, while some big spending teams like Villa, Stoke & Middleboro have struggled!

Boro are in the playoff picture this season and we're last season.

Villa got to the playoff final last season and may well again this season.

Stoke hired Gary Rowett.

Yes you can get promoted spending very little. But mostly teams don't.

Behind many teams that have spent "fuck all" this season is usually several seasons of steady investment that has been allowed to mature and knit together. Like Norwich, like Derby, like Leeds (to a lesser extent)

Villa have come good of late, but they were struggling earlier in the season under Bruce, having spent a fortune. Sheff Utd are certainly the exception this season. But teams like Huddersfield and Burnley have shown in the past it can be done without breaking the bank.

Huddersfield smashed their wage bill though.

And last time Burnley went up they spent £9m on one player

Norwich may have spent £6M this season, but they also sold 2 players for a combined £35M. Their high spending years were off the back of Prem money! How much did Pearce spend that summer? £8M?

It's.not.just the investment imo, although I agree with pope- think style also matters. Lack of consistency (Or identity if u will) means we constantly are left with players who don't fit the manager.

Sticking with a manager for a bit may wring more value out of the investments we do make.

Actually in 16/17 Norwich broke even on transfers - &10.5m in and £10.5m out.

In 17/18 they made a profit of £16.5m and 18/19 the profit was £29m and they only spent £5m.

It’s not the only way to do it by any means but to downplay what Norwich have done by suggesting it is down to previous seasons’ spending is wrong and ignores the fact that Sheff Utd have also worked to a strict budget.

You are falling into the same fallacy as a good friend of mine by assuming that zero net spending is not actually spending.

You have a youngster of massive potential that money bags PL clubs decide to spend £20m on.

You lose ONE player. Maybe a very good one, but it's one player

You then spend, say £22m across the squad, greatly improving it with 6-7 players.

You did not just spend £2m and do everything on the cheap.

You spent £22m and hit the jackpot to pay for it.

You have signed 7 players and lost just one.

THAT is investing across several seasons. In an age of FFP it is the only way to do it if you don't have PP. Even Derby have had to do it that way.

The big difference is the club's that a) manage to produce those single, 'jackpot' players (of which we are one) and b) who can afford to actually spend what they make from them.

Norwich have been able to spend most of what they make, until this season we haven't.

£7m for Antonio, £13m for Burke, £15m for Assombalonga plus a handful of other small fees; at least £35-40m in sales over about two seasons. Virtually none was reinvested. Other clubs have been in that position as well
