Toure's An Unfair Target

Defender Bacary Sagna has said that Manchester City can't keep on relying on Yaya Toure to get us out of holes in games, and because of his importance to the side he's amazed by the criticism...

I have said that Yaya has lost a yard of pace (nearly a meter for our younger members), but it does not mean he has lost it. I can't remember a time when Yaya has ever been a brilliant defender, always seems to give away free kicks near our area and always remonstrates with the ref when he gets blown for a foul.

Of late Yaya has been a target regarding his defensive duties, but I put that down to his loss of pace, but Bob Manc recognised that his worth was when he was pushing up front and he emphasised that on Saturday.

Similarly with Mangers. it seems to be a witch hunt for the young lad and he will read this and get nervous every time he turns out, he his not worth his £32m price tag, but is not as bad as the media try to make out. They had a go at DeMichelis, but he rode the storm and if EM20 can do the same all well and good.

The media love their targets. They did indeed identify Demichelis but he adapted and showed them what he could deliver. Mandala has had longer but is much less experienced - he will come good.

Toure has been a target for as long as I can remember his playing in sky blue. I still remember the pundits banging on about his wages when he was signed and after six games saying he wasn't a Premier League player. He has lost a yard/metre - who doesn't - and I can find him frustrating at times but he can deliver and is quality as we have witnessed with his recent goals.

Easy target, on course to scoring double figures in the league for us, again.

It is a witch hunt for Mangala, every slight error he makes is exaggerated wildly. Mangala has started 38 league games for us now, we've won 28, drawn 5 and lost 5 of those games, total of 89 points ( 86 points won us the league ), not bad for a liability, a nightmare waiting to happen or whatever other tag the rabble want to give him. We've conceded 33 goals ( we conceded 37 in 38 when we won the league under Pellegrini ) in them 38 games. I would appeal for City fans to cut him some slack but I know I'm wasting my breath.

The stats re Mangala don't lie - but I'm not convinced they tell the whole story either. We are an attacking side packed with talent therefore it figures that since we are attacking we will A) score more goals and B) concede fewer since most of the time we tend to be in the oppositions half which means that C) we will win most of our games. I don't think Mangala is as bad as some on here make out but I don't think he is exactly a defensive colossus either. We will be able to judge him (and perhaps Otomendi too) more accurately once he has got used to the pace of the PL - for the moment I feel he is a work in progress.

As for Mr K - write him off at your peril! One minute ambling back like a shire horse after a hard day at the plough - the next belting in goals like the thoroughbred that he most surely is. He will bale us out more than once before the season is out and we will be grateful to him for it.

I am a big fan of Mr. K. but at 32 it may be time to move him on in the summer as his legs are starting to let him down with that 90kg frame hard to move box to box. As for Mangala he is just not quite good enough to be in our top two CB's and that is why we should buy a top CB who is better than Vince whom we can no longer rely on. As for Nic I think he is very good, maybe better than Kompany and will get even better.

With Mangala I think it could be more to do with the lack of confidence we have in him rather than his lack of skill. I know the lack of confidence in him is due to his own, as I see it, lack of confidence in certain situations but I am sure he will go on to become a mainstay of our defense. The media use any excuse to have a go at our players in the same way they have to mention how expensive a side we are. They don't seem to realise that it shows them up to be incompetent at their work. Mills eg.
Yaya in a player that invites criticism due to his style of play and his experience as a player shows up when he takes his little rests during play. You reckon?

Buy another one? That'll be six seasons in a row then that we'll be trying to bed in a new centre back.

In regards Otamendi, interesting that Porto clearly rated Mangala higher when they were both there together, Otamendi was essentially binned off in favour of Mangala. I see him making just as many errors and being just as rash as Manga, maybe it's a case of Otamendi giving the impression of looking more assured that sees so many rating him above Manga who tbf does look a bit unorthodox and nervous at times.

In Otamendi's defence, he has been at the club less than 4 months, and like Demichelis should be given time to get used to this league. Unfortunately, too many people expect players to hit the ground running. My main concern with Mangala is that he's had this bedding in period, and still looks a bit ropey occasionally. I'm happy to give him more time though, as I'm sure the problem this season is more down to the enforced changes to the back. He looked great in the games leading up to Vinnie's injury

Don't get me wrong mate, I'm not slagging Otamendi off, I rate him. I just don't understand why Mangala got slated for the same thing in his early days here yet so many say Otamendi looks good.

Not sure Otamendi looks that good either - but as has been mentioned he is still getting used to the PL/team mates/style of play etc. I'm sure that when this has happened we will have a fine pair of centre backs to add steel and flair to the spine of the team.

I'm sure we will too KCT, in fact I believe we already have and the criticism they receive for the odd mistake is way ott.

Meanwhile back at the ranch an interesting comment from Pellegrini:

"I think he is a very important player. A lot of media criticise his body language and the way he runs, but, if you had all the statistics of Yaya after every game, he is the one player that runs more."
