Tough times don't last (usually)

Right now as Villa fans we are hurting. Our pride has taken some huge punches in recent times, mis-management and ownership. No investment under Lerner, stupid over-the-odds purchases under Xia. Relegation followed by mediocrity in the second tier and it seems a third season of not getting back to the promised land of huge wads of sky cash in the Premier League. In nearly all the years I have been (and I am still fiercely) proud to be Claret & Blue all I have ever really known (until the last few years) is being accustomed to seeing the Villa being the best team in the Midlands, top dogs season after season, finishing higher than our neighbours, seeing them go up and down like a yoyo whilst we remained to feast at the top table. We have lauded it over our rivals and rubbed their faces in it. We are Aston Villa we crowed proudly.

Baggies had the mantle of top team for a few years as we began our decline, and now Wolves fans have the chance to beat their chests in triumph and fair play to them. I remember in the 80s how that club (Wolves) nearly ceased to exist and setting aside partizan loyalty to our beloved Villa, the very thought that such a club as that, which like ours, has such a glorious past could have been allowed to vanish for good, would have been a disaster for English football. So let the Gold and Black fans have their moment in the spotlight, they have earned the right and right now Wolves are performing admirably in the Premier League, certainly better than we did in our last few years of top flight football. Albion just beat us on our own patch and that galls us all. And if I am being brutally honest, I think Blues will want it more than our lot when we go there and it could be yet more pain, frustration and anger to endure. But as I said, we have been gloating for years about our superiority and our rivals' inferiority. Well what goes around comes around and for the time being we have to accept it and take it on the chin. It ain't pleasant and our neighbours will revel in our demise. We are just gonna have to man up and tough it out. As the saying goes, the bigger they are, the harder they fall, and Villa has fallen a long long way from such a once lofty position very quickly.

Under our new owners we have a chance to rebuild, and there is much to do. No House Of Cards like under Xia, there is now substantial wealth and experience in place at the very top. But we won't be suddenly tearing up the Championship next season. If Smith is to be given the chance to build something its going to take a good 2 seasons to completely overhaul this shambolic over paid squad. We may have to face the prospect of our better players going in summer (Grealish, McGinn for example). I hope the foundations are now being put in place to start afresh and that by 2021 season we will begin to see a team emerging not just good enough to get us back to the top flight but to stay there.

I truely believe we will see Aston Villa fight its way back to the big time, and we can again reclaim our crown as the biggest club in the Midlands, but more than that, we can compete with the best in the land and be a team we can all be proud to be a part of. These tough times will make us all stronger. Sometimes we have to endure the torrid times to really appreciate the good times when they come round. We will rise again. Up The Villa!!

Excellent review Starchild and put me in a reflective mood!
We have been here before of course, and worse the old division 3. But if there were rich clubs in those days, and there were, it’s nothing to compare with the new greed league. We can’t change what’s happening to our club as we go through a phase-one rebuild again and spending vast sums on players and their wages won’t sustain us. The only thing we can change is our own mindset and the way we look at things. I’ve looked at every result being a disaster because it drew us further away from the nirvana of automatic promotion. Results were everything. Now I shall try to be more philosophical and patient, enjoy matches for little moments within them and look forward to seeing many current players leave and new ones arrive. Thank you Alan Hutton and co, time to move on.

we will rise like a phoenix from the flames form never lasts but class is permanant and villa are upper class

Agree with the sentiment of starchild here, It's why the home crowd get so easily frustrated and why the Villa Park atmosphere is often tense. Fans of the past have been so used to being local top dogs that the turnabout in fortunes has come as a real culture shock, We are a premier club in all but where it matters, on the pitch. It's here we have to match opponents in desire and commitment and hope that then the quality will be seen.

What is important to remember is that we now have the right owners who share a vision and will get it right. Dean will be backed but its not going to happen overnight or in the 4 months so far. It will take a clear out a new influx of young hungry skilful players that buy into Smiths methods and style with a pre-season.

I see us starting a new season fresh and ready for a promotion campaign, only then can Dean be properly judged, he has handled himself well so far and we did see some encouraging signs initially. Key Injuries have scuppered this winter and the lack of defensive cover was a Bruce hangover.

No more gambling, time to build and be back stronger and for a change actually live up to our old motif of PREPARED. UTV.

We can also take solace in the fact that McCormack won't get his pay rise if we don't go up this season - I know that it is a very slim silver lining but I'm clutching at straws here.

I cried my eyes out walking home from Villa Park when we were relegated to the 3rd Division. I was there the day we were promoted back to the 2nd Division, I have been at Wembley for 3 League Cup wins. I was there the night we were promoted to the 1st Division. I was under the clock at Highbury when we clinched the 1st Division title and at Wembley for the Charity Shield. I was in Rotterdam for the European Cup final and witnessed the Super Cup. Some might say that I have been fortunate or just downright greedy, but if you add up the silverware of the last 50 years at Villa and then do the same for the others, I think you can see we have significantly more than the others added together.
Yes, recent times have been lean, but we are still the biggest club in the Midlands and under the new regime, we will recover our rightful place at the top.

Ps - just one trophy missing from my collection with the FA Cup - I was born in 1957!! A couple of attempts at righting this but to no avail. Make the complete set and I can die contented

Thought the bit 'no investment under Lerner' was a strange take on his time here Starchild?

There was massive investment, some of it needed infrastructure wise, the mistakes came in managers appointed. The second season he was here, we were the biggest spenders in Europe.

Think Lerner proved actually that it isn't just about spending. I am not sure that we will get back to the top, football is a busted flush (massive spenders Chelsea losing 6-0 to Man City was a shocker, spend that much and still you can be outspent)

I've fallen out of love with modern football, I just can't seem to finalise it and get a divorce from it!

Our new owners have also talked about sustainability. How many of the top of the league clubs across the world do we all think are sustainable?

Time will tell where we can get to, I don't think I'm optimistic or pessimistic right now, just a little tired out by it all, including how some fans don't go to support, just to abuse.

No I think Lerner proved that if you're going to spend money to win the league you need to have a better back room staff and CEO and the correct manager, I find it ridiculous that we were willing to spend so much money and not go out and get a high calibre manager in the Pep, Klopp, Mourinho (back in the day) mold etc. Hiring Martin O'Neil was the biggest mistake and 1st mistake from Lerner and then Lerner proved that if you were going to chuck money at the team you just can't up and pull the plug as he did and look where it got him and us.

I firmly believe that had O'Neil not been our manager and we had a pedigree manager we would be where the likes of Liverpool, Citeh and Spurs are now.

Yup, exactly that for me. We missed our chance, not totally sure - not in the medium term - we'll get another chance unless the new owners are looking to spend big to push us up there.

Yeah it's hard to have patience after 10 years of screw up after screw up but I'm going to grin and bare it and let Smith get on with his job in the hope he and the board get us high flying again and we back Smith with his own players and he comes good we will be watching some great football too.
