This is not a normal season, and for Poch, the toughest one for him on and off the pitch!
We blew it! We should not have lost that game but we looked clueless as to how to win it! Another bad day at Wembley made all the more miserable by some elementary mistakes made on the pitch by the players we have to come to rely on. Sundays defeat was our first at “home” since 2016. The stats speak for themselves. Kane had eight shots, his most in a single Premier League game, without finding the net, Kane has now had 34 shots on goal and played 12 games in the month of August without scoring in the Premier League and he has hit the post twice in succession in the last two games. Chelski get two shots on target and get two goals! Dele Alli and Eriksen were invisible because Luiz stopped their link up play and Poch didn’t have an answer! As Luiz said after the game, “They always play very well between the lines so I was trying to close the gap and not leave space for them to create”. ”Lloris said: “My frustration is even more personal because the second goal is a lack of success on my part,” “Ok, it happens in football, but the lads made so much effort it makes it so frustrating”. We had 67.5% possession but once again, Chelski spoil our day at Wembley.
We lack pace in key areas. Both Trippier and Davies are not really wing backs and if we are to continue with 3 at the back this month we need to add something else to our attack. The question is; will we have more ideas against Burnley? Burnley have beaten Chelski and they have seen Chelski beat us so will Sean Dyche just clog up the middle of the pitch take Dele Alli and Eriksen out of the game, as Conte did, and force Trippier and Davies to sling in crosses from out wide that are easily headed away. We need someone who can get in around the back of their defence so expect Son to make a start. What did Poch have on the bench to change the game? It has to be said our options are limited. Son, Sissoko and Janssen for the last 3 minutes! United bring on Anthony Martial off the bench for United and they go on to demolish Swansea. Whether signing Barkley will solve our problems is debatable. We need speed! When we beat Chelsea at White Hart Lane last season the speed of Walker and Rose overwhelmed Alonso and Moses in the wing-back positions. On Sunday the Blues were comfortable against the lack of pace Davies and Trippier had. Throughout the life time of the Premier League wing play has been the number one weapon for most of the teams that have won the title – right from Fergie’s United sides to Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal sides, with Henri. Damien Duff, Arjen Robben and Eden Hazard at Chelsea and recently Riyad Mahrez at Leicester City. Manchester City have Leroy Sané and Raheem Sterling, United have Martial and Liverpool have bought Mo Salah not to mention Sadio Mané.
So what can Poch do? What Tottenham really need is a type of player we don’t have, someone who can unsettle deep defences with pace and trickery, someone with a bit of unpredictability who can tear into full-backs with winding dribbles and add more to our attack, like Bale used to do. We wanted Wilfried Zaha but he committed himself back to Palace. We bought Sissoko thinking he would have the quality. We tried Clinton N’Jie but he’s gone and N’Koudou is likely to be loaned out to Verona. Rose may not be going but for how long before he does? So now we are in the market for some speed merchants and, although we have plenty of promising Academy players, we need more proven quality but that is proving difficult to find so we are sticking to our youth policy by trying to bring in young players like Sanchez, Aurier, Sessegnon, Jaydon Sancho and Foyth. We are certainly going to need someone more potent to compete in the Champions League!
The jury is out on the atmosphere at Wembley but will we see a full stadium for Burnley? Even though we had 73,587 fans it still didn’t sound like a joined-up noise! It doesn’t matter how many flags they give us to wave it ain’t WHL, and it don’t feel like WHL, and the boys didn’t play like we were at WHL! Poch has to get the whole team firing on all cylinders. Now is a good chance to start a winning run at Wembley as well as away from home with the next few fixtures coming up? An early goal against Burnley would set this match up for us if we concede first it could be another struggle!
Burnley’s away record last season was the worst of any team, they failed to win a single top-flight game away from Turf Moor, but their 3-2 opening-day win against Chelsea will fill give the Clarets confidence. We are probably going to send out the same side as last week and if the Clarets learnt anything from Chelsea it will be to give Spurs 2/3rds of the pitch and defend the last 3rd, crowd the midfield and force us to play sideways football. We need to provide something different against Burnley, were going to need to be a lot more inventive. Sean Dyche will make sure they make it hard work for us finding space in their last third of the pitch. I would like to see Poch start Kyle Walker Peters, he will add some more pace and now he has signed a new Contract he should be buzzing, Trippier is only 75% fit anyway. Could there also be a place for Harry Winks now Sissoko is gone?
Sam Vokes netted twice at Chelsea. It was Burnley’s home form that kept them up last season but their defence against Chelsea this season was resolute and I can’t see it being any different on Sunday. We have not lost any of our last five games with Burnley, the last time we lost was back in 2010 when, ironically, we had just qualified for the CL and Burnley had just been relegated, sound familiar? In the Prem we have faced Burnley six times overall, winning four of them, Burnley only won once away from home last season and so that win at Stamford Bridge is a warning that this will not be a push over, remember we struggled in 2016 at WHL to overcome them. But Burnley suffered the same fate as us at West Brom last week, one shot on target and West Brom win whilst Burnley had 20 chances and the most possession. Burnley cannot call on Dean Marney due to a knee injury while Jonathan Walters is a doubt with an ankle problem. Burnley have new signing Chris Wood to call on and the New Zealand international will be looking to make an impact after his big-money move from Leeds United.
