Tonight...

By far the best side I have witnessed us play in years. The movement off the ball for Spurs was so fast and relentless the passing was pinpoint accurate. The gulf in millions really showed and once we were 3 down the away crowd could just enjoy it and sang with gallows humour to the end. They were simply way too good for us. No shame in that.
I hope the reaction from the players is positive and Coventry face a fully fired up side on Saturday.

Come on Vambo, it was Spurs reserve team. If u let any premiership team play, first , second or third teams, then they will look good, they are better players. Our only chance was to show fight, spirit, and disrupt them, which we didn't do. We had the chance to give it a go, but we didn't . Poor night

Spot on assessment. Spurs' running off ball, accurate passing and quick closing of space was impressive to watch. But why did gills always see to stand off their players by 2-3 yards this allowing them the space? Surely to have hurried and hustled Spurs would have made it less comfortable for them?

Even more worrying then as apart from a couple of players this was a reserve team. We showed a lot of effort but seemed to be under instructions to just show them deference and defend.

115m worth of signings in the spurs starting line up and another 70m on the bench!

It seems that everyone is either in the camp of "we lost to Spurs, JED out" or "Spurs were the best thing since sliced bread, there is nothing we could do about it". I don't agree with either viewpoint.

Spurs were class and Eiriksen in particular was outstanding and thoroughly deserved a hat trick but selflessly allowed the carthorse up front to take a penalty as a confidence boost presumably after a terrible debut. I wasn't surprised or disappointed that we lost and lost convincingly - Spurs are a class act; however that isn't a carte Blanche to not offer any analysis or criticism where due. I was personally disappointed that we didn't do simple and sensible things well. For me, and I obviously only saw it live and a sketchy replay on the not so big screen, but Nelson was yet again to blame for the first two goals - not out and out howlers, but the Erikson first shot, whilst absolutely drilled looked to be straight at hit; the second one seemed to go through him too. The third goal, whilst a blatant penalty, came as a result of an almost identical foul on osadebe (I think) further upfield that the ref totally ignored (whilst not giving anything outstandingly bad) he did favour the home team and premier league team all night in 50/50s which I guess is usual.

Other areas I thought we could do better, were we were not physical enough, which surely is a natural way of evening things up, there were a number of occasions we didn't do simple things at the back - Ie clear easy balls or mark crosses or corners allowing free headers (this had nothing to do with penalty league quality), up front we should have done things more simply - for example, JET, Jackson, Dack and Osadebe had the ball in decent positions around the box and should have got a cross in early or shot from range, but instead messed about with it, trying to be too intricate - surely against quality like Spurs (defensively as well as possession wise) you try to take every half opportunity that opens?

I actually thought we battled well the first half. Oshilaja, Ehmer and Bond were good. Konchesky was decent defensively but on the ball he doesn't look great and makes wrong decisions for someone with such experience and whose played at a high level. Jackson did some good work going forward, but made some bad choices going forward, Wright had his best game for a while, but have it away too often in deep and dangerous areas, Dack was quiet on a night for him to impress, Cody run tirelessly but was given little service, but for me should have been pushed on a lot more given he was The only outlet forward, JET put a decent shift in in a strange right wing position and battled for a lot as a we seemed to have a game plan to hit him with everything in w wide right position - when he got it down he did ok but is poor in the air for a giant.

All in, some encouragement, we expected to lose to a class side and did, but did we do the best we could? For me, no - we could have done a lot of simple things better and just kept things simple and sensible.

You jokers with your reserve team comments!
Premiership sides don't have reserve teams they have huge squads of top players. The wage bill of Erikson alone is probably the same as our first 11. No one likes losing but come on!

I personally don't really understand why people keep banging on about reserve teams (on one hand) as if they means we should automatically beat them and (on the other hand) spurs players transfer fees and wages - that doesn't excuse goalkeeper errors or not marking players from corners - they are errors whether you're playing against players on 80 grand a week or 800.

Better concentrating on praising and criticising what actually happened on the pitch, rather than trying to excuse or blame things on wages.

I pretty much agree with Steve Treacle's analysis. Different views on the performances of the players but generally in accord.

What frustrates me the most is that we really lack a physicality through our team. We don't have anyone who's prepared to mix it up, get a little bit nasty and generally unsettle the opposition. When your opponents are, player for player, streets ahead, you need to do whatever you can to try and level the playing field. This is how teams like Stoke and West Brom have caused upsets against the top 6 teams year in and year out.

Were we ever going to win this match? Not realistically.
Should we have created more chances and at least had a shot on target? Absolutely.

We just need to get tougher and earn the right to play.

Well said Fox. We didn't even pick up a yellow card. We gave them so much respect, scared to put in a heavy tackle and stood 10 yards off them.

Let's not forget Spurs are a Champions League team now and came close to winning the Premier League last season. They were way better than Watford and other Premier league teams we've played in recent history like Newcastle and Villa.
To dismiss them as Spurs reserves is a bit unfair - Lamela and Erikssen who ran the show are both regular starters. Janssen described as a "cart horse" on here was the top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie last season and signed for 17 million in the summer. He is now Spurs' first choice centre forward with Kane injured. He only took the penalty as it was his first goal for the club.
The 17 year old kid Edwards who came on at the end and played like Messi just summed up the massive gulf in quality between the clubs. At the top 4 of the Premier League it is a different world to what we know and it puts the likes of Dack's ability into perspective.

Did you go to the game, Lark? As all you've done is really off a load of generic stats about Spurs and their players. Eriksson was brilliant - he is generally, but what's relevant is that he was last night. The lad Jansen may have scored a shed load of goals in the Eredivision but has about as much finesse as JET did last night - surely what Eriksen, Jansen Andy own players did last night is more relevant to analysis of last night's match than just talking up what level apes play at and how much they earn?

Why wouldn't we call it a reserve side when they only played 2 from the first team. Sorry, it was naive from JED and only 5-0 flattered us.

I am not disappointed at the defeat so much as the manner of the defeat, we just didn't seem to give it that backs to the wall, die for the shirt kind of performance. I'm sure it was a good training ground exercise for Spurs, and yes I know how good Spurs are, but we never looked like a team who had any belief in our self.

I think some of the lads will look back and think , if only.
