Following on from an article I read yesterday and I post I just made on FB, tipping.
What's it all about and why in the USA is it compulsory. Surely if it's compulsory then it's a form of commission wages and as such would make more sense if included in the price of the items ordered with the server being given a percentage of what they take in revenues - just like taxi drivers. Tips would then be a reward for good service.
What happens if you don't tip in the States or tip too little?
Do you tip in the UK and if so do you use a %age rule or just give what you feel at the time?
What type of things do you reward with tips? I worked in a tyre and exhaust garage when I was a teenager, we got tips there, and then later as a taxi driver where again we got tips. Why should bar staff get tips and not checkout cashires at the supermarket?
I once got a very generous tip from an elderly Scottish lady when I worked for BR. I was on my way to work and she needed to find her way from Moore Street to New Street station. As I was at Moore Street and going to New Street I carried her bag for her whilst showing her the way. She gave me £10, this was over 20 years ago.
Have you ever received tips and what is the most you've ever got in one single tip?
For a long taxi trip (3 hrs one way) I was tipped NOK 1000 (about £100) but I had to put up with a lot of crap, with about 10-12 blokes getting rather drunk on the way, stopping for toilet breaks by the side of the road on about 3 occasions. Fair play to them though, when they saw the mess that they had made they fetched some paper towels and made a good effort at cleaning up after themselves (beer spills, no piss on the bus thank goodness).
