Following on from an article I read yesterday and I post I just made on FB, tipping.

What's it all about and why in the USA is it compulsory. Surely if it's compulsory then it's a form of commission wages and as such would make more sense if included in the price of the items ordered with the server being given a percentage of what they take in revenues - just like taxi drivers. Tips would then be a reward for good service.

What happens if you don't tip in the States or tip too little?

Do you tip in the UK and if so do you use a %age rule or just give what you feel at the time?

What type of things do you reward with tips? I worked in a tyre and exhaust garage when I was a teenager, we got tips there, and then later as a taxi driver where again we got tips. Why should bar staff get tips and not checkout cashires at the supermarket?

I once got a very generous tip from an elderly Scottish lady when I worked for BR. I was on my way to work and she needed to find her way from Moore Street to New Street station. As I was at Moore Street and going to New Street I carried her bag for her whilst showing her the way. She gave me £10, this was over 20 years ago.

Have you ever received tips and what is the most you've ever got in one single tip?

For a long taxi trip (3 hrs one way) I was tipped NOK 1000 (about £100) but I had to put up with a lot of crap, with about 10-12 blokes getting rather drunk on the way, stopping for toilet breaks by the side of the road on about 3 occasions. Fair play to them though, when they saw the mess that they had made they fetched some paper towels and made a good effort at cleaning up after themselves (beer spills, no piss on the bus thank goodness).

I had my haircut yesterday. It cost me £8.50, but I gave the young lady a £1 tip...... even though it wasn't the best haircut I'd ever had.....

I would think it very strange if you had received your best ever haircut for £8.50.

Must admit I would much rather just pay what they want and not worry about tips.

I generally work on 10% in restaurants, if they don't serve me right or aren't polite! I work on 0% !

US is interesting, in most receipts you have the total then underneath suggested tips at different %'s but it is my understanding that it is a no no not to tip at all. But surely if the service is bad then they don't tip? Never dropped up with me, I always find the service good and attentive.

I had a work visa for the US when I was a student back in the early 90's. Worked in restaurants to fund my onward travel and the wage was about £1 a hour or something stupid like that, but with tips you could do quite well. Generally, a 15% tip was really good! and think 10-12.5% was what you were aiming for. Over here though, service staff get minimum wage or more, so not sure why they should expect 10% give or take, like in the US, because the wages aren't purposely depressed like they are there.
However, I still tend to tip 10% or so here because I'm almost embarrassed not to.
BUT, if you are going to tip, don't tip on card, always do it cash. Was told by one of the waiting staff at Nanpan in Sutton Coldfield that card tips were kept by the owner.

It sounds like the owner of Nanpan in Sutton Coldfield is what's technically known as a tosser.

Well I live in NY now been here past 6/7 months... Tipping is another example of USA greed IMO the owner doesnt want to pay them a good wage so it falls on me, you and everyone else... Everyone knows if they dont tip they are fucking that person over... Of course my issue as with most peoples is you end up tipping no matter what the service is like...

I give most taxi drivers shitty tips to be honest because most are dickheads if they let me drink a beer in the cab or put on decent music then I give a decent tip but in general I dont bother...

Always tip in bars and when in restaurants I give the minimum which 10-15% if the service is okay but when you get good service I'll tip 20%...
Good service in a bar is free drinks and shots or if you dont have to go to the bar for drinks...

I dont mind it but it is annoying if you get shit service and they expect it... I also dont like how a lot places will immediately slap on a 20% 'service charge' for groups of 5 or more... Its insulting to be honest you're telling me your service is that good from the get go? If it were that good you'd get that money anyway and probably more...

Ok, if you go a curry with Fear, stay away from his poppadums, he's very protective of them.
