British Transport Police has urged all rail passengers to take heed of a few simple tips to help reduce the chance of them falling victim to the pickpocketing gangs.

Keep purses secure and carry wallets in a pocket
Zip up hand and shoulder bags
Carry bags in front of you with flaps against your body
Keep straps short and bags tucked under your arm
Don't display jewellery
Don't show your money - keep it safely in a pocket out of sight
Install a tracker app on your smartphone
Stay alert of what is going on around you when using your phone in public
Register your electrical gadgets at www.immobilse.com
Keep a record of your phone's unique reference number (IMEI) - to get this dial #06#
Always use your phone's security lock or PIN number
Don't leave valuable items unattended on a train when you visit the toilet or buffet car
If you are going to fall asleep do not leave valuables in view, keep them hidden

If you are the victim of a crime on the railways or Tube report it to a member of transport staff or a police officer straight away. Call BTP on 0800 40 50 40 and in an emergency always dial 999
