Thierry Henry has agreed to become Aston Villa manager

Would be sad to see Bruce go, he’s done well to turn us around after taking over the mess he inherited from RDM. Almost but not quite last season but that play off final was poor. Yo can talk about experience etc but had anyone heard of pochettino before Southampton? Santo before wolves? Derby have just taken a similar gamble with Lampard. Henry could be the next best manager in football but we just don’t know it yet, they have to start somewhere.

As has been said Santo and Poch had been at big clubs before pitching up in England. And we are not a proving ground for novice managers either. Yes they do have to start somewhere but that should not be an Avfc staring at the abyss trying to reverse years of mismanagement. We are not a nursery school for Thierry Henry

Seems people are getting excited over the name and nothing else. There has been comparisons with Pep going in at Barca and Zidane at Madrid. There is no comparison. Pep had Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Zidane had Bale, Modric and Ronald ffs!.
The name Henry is great but that's all it is. No managerial experience. Experience is required in this league.

Imagine his first day at BH. With the players at his disposal.

Suit- Morning Thierry

Thierry: tell me who is zis player trying to decapitate everyone?

Suit: that's Alan Hutton , he is a right back, well left back, well actually he is now playing centre back as we haven't got anyone else. But you are Thierry Henry though.

Thierry: and who is zis podgy player standing staring at the closed gates outside ?

Suit: Ah that's Ross Mcormack. He is fat and has refused to play and everyone keeps blaming the last manager for this even though Fatty has had loads of chances to sort himself out. But you are Thierry Henry, you can do anything

Thierry: and who is this player who looks like a black Keith Lemon with his bandaged hand?

Suit: that's Jonathan Kodjia. He is does not know how to pass to a teammate. But you are Thierry Henry though.

Thierry: and what of the young players. Who is this Hepburn-Murphy?

Suit: ah, he lives in the treatment room. He hasn't left there in 3 years. But you have the name Thierry Henry. You can do anything.

Not exactly like Barca and Madrid is it ?

Lol...... Nice one Melon.

I've seen quite a few comments on social media along the lines of: England appointed an untried manager last summer and look what happened! WC semi-finals!! So let's immediately go and get Henry because he will achieve similar success with us.

Erm, Southgate had a very solid grounding in management at Middlesbrough then the England youth and U21 set up. Henry has had a couple of seasons on Sky. Don't see how that stacks up personally.

The Mail is running a poll, which has 3/4 preferring Bruce to Henry. I suspect its been high-jacked by bluenoses!! From comments on this and other sites I would have thought more like 50/50!

To be fair, England would have got to the semi-finals without a manager given their draw, Tunisia & Panama in the groups, Columbia and Sweden in the knockouts. Couldn't have been an easier route.

Not really the point I was making, but thanks for pointing that out. Although worth mentioning that Colombia were better than us on the day and Sweden saw off Holland and Italy to reach the World Cup and won their group which included Germany and Mexico.

Not at all impressed by the way this has been handled. Absolutely totally and utterly unprofessional. If he is to be appointed then it should have been done with respect for the current encumbent. Not allowed to leak from the gutter press. If it's not true, an official rebuttle should be made, rather than riding the shit wave of publicity.

An amateur start to what may turn out to be yet another travesty. On the other hand, they're billionaires, what could possibly go wrong!:shake: Without an experienced team alongside Henry, could prove to be yet another fucking great big gamble with our great club if true.

Poor start to the new regime. I need to be convinced that this is not just another false dawn before I start blowing smoke......Hope Henry turns out to be a good driver if all this comes to pass.

I think its all bull why would Thierry Henry want as his first job as football manager to come to a club where he would have to sell his best players to raise 40 mil for FFP and then sell more players just to bring his own players in i can not see that being appealing to a young first time manager.

Don't see the point about repeating a headline which is pure media click-bait, if you read the articles themselves.

Would imagine the new owners might sound out several people if they're wondering about a change, as would be natural; new owners rarely stick with the existing manager without at least considering the possibility of change. As it stands, considering where we are, sticking with Steve has a lot going for it. That may be the best chance of getting stuck in this season.

Texted my brother this bit of news, he’s a big Arsenal and NYRB fan, “fuck off now I actually have to support Villa rather than ridicule you constantly.”

So at least Henry will bring some sympathy/eyeballs our way from New York Red Bull and Le Arse supporters... whether that’s something we want is another question entirely

the only place Henry could realistically have at Villa right now would be as a coaching role for the forwards, a specialist in the field if you like. Calderwood can work closely with the defence, Henry works with the forwards. Maybe we can bring in Merse or bring back Sid to offer specialised coaching for the midfield. If you were a forward would you be more willing to listen to a former striker who knows what is required or a coach who has never played in that position? The players will spend time in with their mentors for an hour or so, then work as a unit and train as one squad. Part of the mentor's remit will also be to work with the under 23 squad and bring them through to be ready for the step up into the first team squad. Bruce stays as manager and we keep stability but he has at his disposal ex players with pedigree who can offer input to the manager during the game to help either close a game out from a winning position or address issues on how we can get to a winning position. Maybe Henry could get a feel for the club and if he does eventually take over he will be better equipped for the task and it is not a dramatic switch. It worked for Liverpool for years from the 70s to the late 80s - Shankley, Paisley, Moran, Dalglish all were part of the set up before moving to manager of the club.
