England vs Nigeria, player ratings: Who put their hand up for a starting role at the World Cup?

2 June 2018 • 7:23pm
Harry Kane continued his scoring streak as England captain but Gareth Southgate's side made heavy work of beating Nigeria in their final Wembley outing before the World Cup.
England took the lead inside seven minutes courtesy of Gary Cahill's headed effort and Kane doubled the advantage before the break, when modest goalkeeping allowed him to hit the net for the sixth time in five appearances with the armband.
But what might have turned into a walk in the park against a side ranked 47th in the world became a tense 2-1 victory as Arsenal's Alex Iwobi struck less than two minutes into the second half, robbing the hosts of their composure.
Who impressed and who disappointed? Here are our player ratings from the Wembley clash:
Jordan Pickford 6/10
He has emerged as, presumably, Gareth Southgate’s No 1 although there was little opportunity to prove his worth apart from a smattering of routine saves which he dealt with comfortably. Had little chance with Nigeria’s goal.
Kieran Trippier 7/10
Catapulted into a starting wing-back berth although who would have thought he would also be such a dead-ball specialist? An early free-kick won a corner from which he himself set up the opening goal.

Kyle Walker 6/10
Has looked comfortable for the most part in a back three but badly exposed by Odion Ighalo for the Nigerian goal. His pace will help him out but still a work in progress in that role.

John Stones 6/10
Couple of important clearances from set-pieces when England came under pressure. His height and athleticism were important and his ball-playing ability was a valuable outlet.
Gary Cahill 8/10
A late run into the England team, and possibly not guaranteed a starting job, but his superb finish for the opening goal showed why he is ahead of his rivals in finishing, if nothing else. His experience and poise were also evident.
Ashley Young 6/10
If Southgate wants to be ambitious, Young showed he is the man for the job with a number of marauding left-wing runs, although questions remain about his defensive nous as Victor Moses showed after the break.

Eric Dier 6/10
Sat in front of the back four, and an excellent pass set up the second goal, although might have done better with a free header from a second-half corner and often drifted as Nigeria took a hold in the second half.
Jesse Lingard 6/10
Showed why this system suits his style with some direct, darting runs towards the by-line that promised much but never really delivered. Like the rest of his team, became less effective after the interval.

Raheem Sterling 6/10
His hold-up and approach play were excellent but question marks remain about his strike rate. A couple of good chances went begging but played a key role in Harry Kane’s goal. Also booked for simulation.

Dele Alli 7/10
Booed by the sizeable Nigerian crowd but turned in a busy display with a couple of decent passes that picked holes in the defence. Faded as the game wore on and did not connect particularly well with club mate Kane.

Harry Kane 7/10
His strike rate - one chance, one goal - shows just why he is so vital to England hopes. Also proved a strong target man for more mobile forwards to play off.

Substitutes
  • Reuben Loftus-Cheek for Lingard (67 mins)
  • Danny Rose for Young (67 mins)
  • Marcus Rashford for Sterling (77 mins)
  • Danny Welbeck for Kane (77 mins)
  • Fabian Delph for Alli (81 mins)
Young was coming under increased pressure early in the second half as Nigeria attacked down their right and Southgate’s wish to see how Danny Rose did in that position was a logical one.
Similarly, Loftus-Cheek, seen by many as a “wild card” selection for Russia, was offered a brief cameo which had its moments. Rashford and Welbeck were late, like-for-like subs and the former threatened from a couple of half chances.

I must admit before this game I probably would have favoured Young over Rose but after this game Rose has to start. Young will be exposed against better teams, plus being right footed doesn't help.

Also think 3/5 at the back ain't going to work against Tunisia and Panama. We should play Pickford, Walker, Stones, Cahill, Rose, Dier, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Sterling, Kane in the first games and revert back to the back 5 against Belgium IMO.

I think there's tweaks to be made before the first game, but do think Southgate is making some tough and brave decisions. I don't agree with Young or Delph over specialist Bertrand but can pretty much go with the rest of the squad. It's now down to finding the 15 or 16 that will get most of the game time with the rest there in case of an injury. If we start playing over 20 players in Russia you know we're in trouble.

I look forward to Thursday's selection to see if any other players can play their way into the team.

I tell you who shouldn't get any minutes unless injuries to a couple of players....Wellbeck, granted he has a half decent record for England he really shouldn't be anywhere near the squad. Would rather have put Lallana in instead of him.

Kane, Vardy, Rashford should be enough cover for 4/5 games max.

Go 433.

Pickford

Walker
Maguire
Stones
Rose

Dier

Tripps
Alli

Sterling
Rashford
Kane.

Henderson is shite shouldn't be anywhere near the team.

Absolutely agree with you about Wellbeck . If he ever had a time when he was at his peak , it's well behind him now . Also agree with RD about Henderson ........everybody watch as I pose after making a pass to see how good at 10 foot passes I am .........' Kin 'ell if we ain't got anybody better than them two I would sooner go with two players short .
I have serious concerns over Sterling . His decision making is awful and commitment to the cause in getting in where it hurts is questionable .Rashford for me every time . Really like him .
Also have doubts about Walker at centre back , in my opinion that is a dodgy idea , one of his brain farts in that position could be fatal . We have proven centre backs available . I just don't see the point in playing him there"
Apart from all that I am looking forward to it .
Ain't got a clue why all my typing is now being underlined !!

I guess the question is will England play more than 3 games?

Will Canada play any?

No. However the coach that took our women's team to the heights that they reached has now taken over the men's program so there is a chance we will see some improvement in our standings.

Worth considering that in the recent experiment playing Rashford leading the line in Kane's position, he completely messed up. He couldn't play with his back to goal and didn't even venture over to the right hand side of the pitch for the entire first half. Trippier was livid with him. Southgate and every fan in Amsterdam that night noticed he was thinking much slower than the defenders whether it was along the ground or in the air. I just don't see him as capable in the number 9 position.

Well worth his selection for what he can bring in the channels and from the bench but he's not in the England squad as a striker. That's why Southgate correctly (my opinion) went back to Wellbeck as backup to Kane and Vardy. His only other choices that I can think of are Callum Wilson or Jay Rodriguez. He went for Wellbeck knowing he is versatile and experienced.

I think we lack class in too many areas to count but Welbeck and Henderson are jokes. Anyone with a brain would have taken Sessignon because he IS the future for Welbeck because as you say Vardy and Rashford are cover. As for Henderson, I'd ask Delph to cover/compete with Dier, and taken anyone with an actual forward pass so Grealish Madison Shelvey. I think that's a better squad I've put together.

Disagree on Henderson as well. A massively underrated player by fans but appreciated by players and managers. Grealish and Maddison don't even play in the same position. Shelvey isn't a bad shout but he's not that mobile and gets caught out defensively too often. Love him or hate him, Hendo is worthy of his squad place and will probably be ahead of Dier based on their form this season. They might play together at the expense of Dele or Lingard if we persist with 3 at the back with wing-backs.

Henderson is better than our other options for that position but must be one of the weakest players starting there for a team in the top 8 bookies faves.

Henderson is ok but to be honest he's very similar to Dier. Decent player but they both need a top quality CM alongside them. Playing them together probably isn't going to work.

If we had a better version of Wilshere to choose from I'd really fancy us as dark horses, maybe a decent CB as well :-/

CB and CM are definitely our weakest areas.

Dier tends to play well in internationals. Think he's less prone to error with the slower pace compared to the PL. Plus he has rapport with Walks, Dele, Tripps, Kane & etc. Think it's a no brainer for him to start personally.

Having watched all the build up I'd play Deir in the back three with Jones, Cahill. Stones played a pass so stupid last night I actually played back the SKY box. What's weird about him is the longer he has to think the worse he is. Then I'd give Delph the holding role he has a better range of passing than Henderson. Then it's Kane up top with Alli Sterling and Rashford fighting his pal Ratboi for the other place.

Dier is not good enough as a CB. Never liked him in that position. I thought he played well against Nigeria. Ether you play him as DM or not at all. If he plays in CB people will just be disappointed with him. He probably end up as scapegoat.
