The Unai Emery Thread

Fascinated to see how Emeryball evolves this season. Suzuki and THB add a totally different ball playing dimension at the back. Suzuki’s distribution yesterday, especially in the first half, successfully moved Arsenal out of shape.

Mbaye is also much more expansive on the right hand side compared to what we’ve had for a while now, although I guess there’s a chance he might play on the left too.

Point is we’re going to look very different I think.
 
Understand the caution from some regarding the summer upheaval, think there’s maybe a bit of that in all of us given the extent of the changes. But amongst the carnage there’s been one constant that’s more important than any player and that for us no doubt is the best news of the summer. I’d trust this bloke with my last fiver!
And I think it probably makes his position at the club long term even more of a possibility. Absolutely no chance in hell he’ll look at that squad now and think…I’m off…even though some in the media still seem to think he’ll be gone by the end of the season. Makes absolutely no sense at all especially as it’s now mainly his squad and not what he inherited. But they don’t know Unai like we do. Most of them see the departures and really haven’t a clue who we’ve bought. McCoist this morning talked about bringing in ‘a couple’. Pathetic ignorance. The new look squad will make Unai even more determined, if that’s possible. We might need a bit of patience this season, although I still wouldn’t be surprised to see us up in the European places yet again come next May. In his after match interview on Villa TV last night he talks about feeling optimistic and building the squad for the next ‘weeks, months and years.’ For me, he’s not going anywhere, anytime soon. That’s key to our continued success on and off the pitch.

I'm really excited to see what's coming next. I'm a little worried that Pau and THB at the back will make us very weak but we will be terrifying to anyone playing against us. You can't press us because the goalkeeper can play a ball over the top and put Jackson in on goal. You can't sit off us because we will pick you apart.

Unai is going to beat this league to death with the short blanket. He's just incredible. Whatever you try to do he's going to flip it on its head and use it against you, that includes buying all of his best players.

Yes, it's not like Unai has managed in Europe 17 seasons in a row, is it? Even at tiny Villarreal, he had them consitently just behind the big 3 in Spain with a minuscule budget.
 
I'm really excited to see what Emery can FINALLY build with his own players. I'm going to try to relax about the weekly results grind and focus on tasting what Chef Unai is cooking.
 
The Athletic article suggests he’s not exactly getting all of the players he has pushed for despite them all being largely feasible. Mateta, Bowen and Estupinan being standouts, we weighed up Barnes and I seriously doubt this was Olabe. Garnacho and Gomes being two he seemingly really wanted, Mbaye must have been universally wanted.

Despite this he is obviously on board with the signings and highly motivated.

Thank fuck. I wouldn't have been against that trio, particularly Estupinan but thank Christ for whatever combination of Olabe, those clubs and players making the deals not work.

I like Mateta but Jackson, Madjo and Mateta is overkill. I shudder to think of the deal we'd have given West Ham and Bowen. Estupinan makes plenty of sense. Barnes, fuck me but he would have been far less risky than Nacho.

The biggest difference I see between Ollie and Jackson is Jackson is a creator. thru ability rather than persistence and hardwork like Ollie. Ollie typically hassled and harried the backline into mistakes. Jackson brings others into play, what we missed against Arsenal was runners beyond him. Garnacho, Mbaye are runners; Manzambi can also get in behind too. Gomez from deep as well.

Feels like that's partly where this is going. Fascinating to see, really. Unai must see something in the "meta", most teams press and defend the same way now. 4-4-2 mid-block.

Yeah people try and stop us by going man-for-man. The way to break that is with runners and ball-carriers.

Someone should be asking that arsenal fan should Madrid be taking Arteta from arsenal - that’s a more realistic scenario for me. I agree Langoe - Emery is here for the long term which will disappoint a fair few.

I've seen clips of this moron on his own YouTube channel and he's your typical clueless Arsenal fan. The other 2 lads who work with him are a spurs fan and a Chelsea fan who seen to enjoy telling him Emery is a better manager than Arteta so he's definitely got a chip on his shoulder about that.
 
Looking at that, wouldn't it be nice to have a right to reply as a Villa fan and tell them where to shove their opinions. This should be saved and shoved down Ferdinand's throat when we are top 4 around or just after Xmas....
